CHAPTER FIVE

Gina pulled up to Bradly Co.'s car park. She remained quiet, as was Marcus, still simmering from their first argument, which had been over whose car they should take. Gina had won.

They walked briskly into the building, and everything was as they had expected: the shimmering of many lights and the breeze of the air conditioners. Everyone walked purposefully here and there, and the large lobby rocked with the tap of people’s shoes against the hard tiled floor and the incessant beep of telephones.

Gina led the way. She had made contact with Terry, one of Zach’s closest friends and also an employee. He was surprisingly large; there was nothing anyone could have told them to prepare them for the sight of such a mammoth man. In contrast to his humongous physique, he seemed a gentle soul, given his deep yet soothing baritone voice, and that he came off as being timid.

“Zach's a great guy, a good friend, you know? And sure, we’ve heard what he's being accused of but even that came as a rude shock to us,” Terry explained.

“You know he owed some money, don't you?” Marcus asked.

“He was a gambler, and I think all gamblers eventually rack up some very bad debt, but that doesn't necessarily make them bad people, does it?” Terry replied, scratching his bald head.

“I want you to forget everything you've heard about the accusations against Zach. Walk me through who Zach is, the everyday Zach, the one who is your friend,” Gina cut in.

“Okay. We see each other every day—we're tight like that. Even when we don't have shifts, we meet at his place for beer and to watch a football match together,” Terry began.

“You ever have any reason to fight? Maybe something you don't see eye to eye on?” Marcus asked.

“Sure. We support different football clubs, so we argue when we watch the matches.”

“No, Terry, something that goes in way deeper than that,” Gina said, placing her hand on Terry’s.

Terry flinched at the gesture once; Marcus was impressed.

“We had this big fight once. I always tried to talk him out of his gambling addiction, but that night, it was something serious. The weekend before that, he cashed out big, I’m talking five thousand, so that weekend, he said he was going big in one of the larger casinos on the island. I warned him. We fought that night, and we didn't speak for like a week after,” Terry explained.

“Do you have any idea what happened that night?” Marcus asked.

“I can’t say, but he told me he fucked up real good. He said some of the big boys were after him. One day, we arrived at his place from work, and the whole place was trashed from top to bottom. He didn't sleep there for two weeks after that.”

“But he finally went back—I mean, to his place?” Gina asked.

“Sure, but after the first night, I didn't see him for a full three days. He almost got fired, but he came around again, out of the blue.
