Chapter 6
On The Second Day After Christmas
I came downstairs the following morning to find both Mother and Daddy in the kitchen. Daddy had the week off from work, and I was glad of that. I didnât want him out of my sight until I felt confident that this Freddy business was behind us.
Wanting to speak with Daddy alone, I said, âMother, why donât you go play us something, and Iâll make breakfast.â
She was a hard nut to crack, and she probably figured I was up to something. âIâve already got biscuits in the oven, and Iâd prefer not to wake your sister until theyâre done. If youâd prefer to speak with your father alone, the two of you may go to the living room.â
âThereâs no need, Max,â Daddy said. âShe knows.â
âHow?â I asked.
âA double homicide in our town isnât so common that the newspaper wouldnât carry the story two days in a row,â she said. âEspecially when the killer or killers remain at large.â
Huffing out a breath, I said, âWell, for goodnessâ sake, donât tell Dot.â
âWhat did you want to talk with me about in particular?â Daddy asked.
âThe gun.â I sat at the table beside him. âWhat are you going to do?â
âIâm going to turn it in to the police,â he said.
âYou canât.â
âWhy canât he?â Mother asked. âWeâve been sitting here discussing it, and itâs the most reasonable solution.â
âNo, itâs not,â I said. âFreddy ditched the thing here thinking his not having it with him would keep him and Mavis safe. But it didnât. If Daddy leaves here with that gun, he might end up like them.â I looked from Mother to Daddy. âDonât you see? The shooter thought one of them was carrying the gun. Now theyâre dead, and their killer still doesnât have the gun. People know they were here. If you leaveââ I broke off, unable to continue.
He covered my hand with his. âWhat do you suggest, sweetheart?â
âCall the police and ask them to come here.â
Mother stood and went to the oven to check the biscuits. âI donât know. The police are trying to solve this case quickly in order to reassure the townspeople that thereâs not a madman on the loose. Some ambitious young officer wanting to make a name for himself could come here, make your father look guilty, and arrest him.â
âOkay, then Iâll take the gun to the police station.â
Both parents bristled at my suggestion.
âIt makes perfect sense,â I said. âI can deliver the package, say I found it in the street or something, and ââ
âWhy are you afraid for me to leave the house with the gun but believe itâs a fine idea for you to do so?â Daddy asked.
âIâm an innocent young lady, Daddy. Neither the murderer nor the police will think Iâm up to anything.â I batted my eyes.
âInnocent, my Aunt Fanny.â Mother slipped on oven mitts and removed the pan of biscuits from the oven. âWeâll discuss this after breakfast. Iâm going upstairs to wake your sister.â
When I heard Mother climbing the stairs, I told Daddy, âYou know Iâm right.
