Robin studied the photograph closely, changing the angle to get better light. “To tell you honestly, there is certainly a similarity to Richard, no question, but I’d have to see another angle to be positive. Some features are the same, like the nose, but the chin looks different. And because it’s black and white, I can’t tell the colour of the eyes. They’d be a dead giveaway.”

Robin had stopped off at Aurora’s condo on the way home Monday night. “Isn’t it strange that Richard had this other life that I knew nothing about? One time, he actually said to me that he wished he hadn’t been an only child and how he always wanted a sister. This is all beyond me, if you know what I mean.”

Aurora nodded.

“So tell me about Freya,” Robin said, putting down the picture.

Aurora told her as much as she knew. At the end of it, she hesitated, then proceeded. “Let me ask you this. You were intimate with Richard, do you think he was capable of abusing his sister? Did you ever see any streak of violence in him? Any hint that he could behave in an abnormal way?”

“None; none whatsoever. Our sex was pretty…”she paused, searched for the right word, “…normal. I guess that’s the only way to describe it. He wasn’t forceful, nothing kinky; actually, come to think of it, it lacked excitement. I thought maybe it was me or that we never spent enough time together, but it was pretty normal.”

“Well, maybe it was the father who abused Freya. But what do I know about any of this? Just talking about it makes me uncomfortable.”

“Me too. Creeps me out actually. You know Aurora, I’m beginning to feel guilty that I’ve pulled you into this.”

“Don’t be silly. I was just helping out, but now my interest is aroused. Maybe there is a story in all of this.”

Robin looked shocked.

“Oh don’t worry; it wouldn’t be about you. Trust me. It would be about Richard. Assuming we’ll ever get to the bottom of it.”

“Good. I’d hate to have my stupidity exposed in public,” Robin said with a sigh. “By the way, just so you know, I’m going off to Hong Kong for two weeks, starting tomorrow. We have the pitch of a lifetime coming up. Speaking of which, I better get home and pack. I have some last minute stuff to do.” She gathered her stuff together and headed for the door.

They embraced and Robin made Aurora promise not to let this search for Richard be a distraction from her new job.

Aurora promised, holding her fingers crossed behind her.
