When we walked into Littleton Chevrolet, Bob Mosley headed us off before we got too far into the showroom.

“Hello there,” he said, careful not to identify us as detectives. “What can I do for you two?” He seemed to realize what we’d likely be there for, and followed up with a quick, “Um, Rex isn’t here at the moment.”

“Do you expect him in?” Spats asked, not quite as friendly as he’d been yesterday. He exaggerated looking at his watch. “I thought he said he’d be here early today.”

Mosley nodded. “He went with a customer on a test drive. He should be back shortly. Would you like to wait?”

“That would be great,” I said. Mosley led us toward some chairs on the other side of the showroom, away from any inquisitive customers. “What is Rex like as an employee?” I asked as Mosley started to walk away.

He stopped and turned around, forcing a smile. He glanced over his shoulder to see whether anyone else was listening. “He’s a good salesman, very friendly with the customers, and I haven’t had any problems with him.” He shifted from foot to foot. “Is something wrong?”

“This is just routine.”

He clasped his hands together and smiled at us. “Can I get you anything to drink? We have coffee, tea, and sodas, and water. Or maybe you’d like to look around outside?” His nervous words tumbled over each other.

Spats and I shook our heads in unison.

“We’re fine,” Spats said. He sat down and casually crossed one leg over the other.

“Well … okay.” Mosley edged away and went into his office. We could see him watching us through the doorway while we waited.

“You think he’ll call Rex and tell him we’re here?” Spats whispered. He continued to look into Mosley’s office.

“I doubt it,” I said. “You’re making him nervous enough as it is.”

I watched Mosley as well. He busied himself at his computer, and he didn’t pick up his phone. A few minutes later, Rex strolled into the showroom with a man with perfectly tended black hair and a gold watch so big that I spotted it across the room. Rex noticed us, and his eyes flickered with unwanted recognition. He talked to the man for a few minutes longer, Rex wore an edgy smile. Finally, the man shook Rex’s hand and left. Rex walked over to us.

“I see you’re back.” His tone was neutral, and he was careful to look directly at me.

“Do you have a few minutes?” I asked.

“I’m really kind of busy.”

“Really?” Spats looked around the empty showroom.

Land’s shoulders sagged just a bit. “Okay, come with me.” He led us back to his tiny office and shut the door. We all took the same seats as we had the other day, and he put his hands in his lap. I wasn’t sure, but I thought I detected a slight shake in them before he hid them. I waited long enough to make him uncomfortable.

“What’s this about?” he asked.

This time, I let Spats take the lead. “We did some checking into Cherry’s phone records,” he began.
