It was three days later that Captain Morgan’s ship docked in the harbor. That night at dinner, we asked him if he recalled the incident with the girl. He was first displeased that we had gone against his wishes, but that passed when we gave him word-for-word the message she had for him.

He sat silent for a minute. I broke the silence with the question we both had. “What will you do about Captain Trace?”

He smiled. “Learn this, lads. In a fight at sea or on land, we all have the same weapons, the same measure of courage. To win or lose is a matter of chance. But hear me. What gives you the edge is this—if you use it.” He tapped the side of his head. “So I’ll ask you. What would most men of our breed do about a traitor?”

Angwyn and I both answered almost in unison. “Kill him.”

He sat back and took a draught of wine. “Hmm. I suppose.”

I asked it. “What will you do?”

He tapped his head again with his finger. “Right now? Absolutely nothing.”

We looked at each other. “And later?”

“More of the same.”

“You mean you’ll let him get away with it?”

“I didn’t say that. This will be your second lesson. Learn it well.”
