Chapter 29

Back home, Carl parked the Highlander on the side of his driveway. He looked up and down the street before opening the overhead garage door and stepping inside. With both vehicles in there, it would have been a tight squeeze, and he wouldn’t have had enough room to freely move around the Ford to give it a thorough wipe down and cleaning. He’d take the car back to Martin’s house later after the neighborhood lights went out. He wanted to avoid explaining why he was backing out of his garage in a vehicle that didn’t belong to him. After dropping off Martin’s car, he’d call a rideshare from a few blocks away. Martin would never be the wiser, and he’d never know that his vehicle had been used when Carl met up with Tom at Wicker Park—or when Carl had killed him later that night.

Before he started on the car, Carl needed to check his leg. He hoped it didn’t look as bad as it felt. In the bathroom, he lowered his sweats and gently eased off the bandage. The stitches held, so he washed the wound again and reapplied the salve. With clean dressings on, he pulled up his sweats, shook another four ibuprofen into his hand, and guzzled them down with a beer.

Wearing rubber gloves, he carried a bucket of hot soapy water and a rag to the car. He wiped down every door handle, the door’s trim and window frames, the liftback latch, and all the interior surfaces in the front-seat area of the car. After that, he vacuumed the floor mats, and by seven forty-five, he was done. He planned to eat supper and watch the news then wait a few more hours before dropping off Martin’s car.
