Chapter 19

“Here’s the things from last week and the logbook for them,” the girl said, handing over a plastic tub of plastic sticks and a pocket note-pad.

“Any problems?” the woman asked, giving her a new tub of clear plastic indicators and note-pad.

The girl smiled. “Nope. I got ‘em all back this time, just like you asked.”

“This time?” the woman asked, closing and locking her desk drawer.

“There were a couple of times I didn’t get ‘em all back. I told you that before. Does that make a difference?”

The woman stood from her chair, shoving it back with her legs. “Of course it does! You have to get every single one of them back!”

“Okay. But last time you said it didn’t matter. What’s the big diff?” the girl asked. She lost her smile, suddenly nervous again. “I mean, it’s not like anything is happening with these things. We still put all the same old indicators in the trays anyway. I was talking to some of the other girls and they think these look too expensive, that their department would never buy them.”

“You what? Who did you talk to?”

The girl hesitantly stepped back. “Just chit-chat with the other girls. Some lady came around asking about them, and then the rest of us starting talking. Just workroom chat, that’s all.”

The woman glared at the girl, watching as she took another step back from the desk. “What lady? Who was she? What was her name? Was it the manager there?”

“I don’t know! Just some lady I’d never seen before. I don’t remember her name. She just wanted to know how the sticks worked, where they came from, that kinda stuff.”

“What did you tell her?”

“Nothin’. I told her exactly what you said, that it’s all top secret research, that it’s none of her business,” the girl said back, becoming defensive about it.

The woman settled into her chair again. “But it wasn’t top secret enough for you to not gossip, right?”

“I guess.”

“That lady, does she work for the hospital? What did she look like?”

“She was in scrubs, so I guess she works there. But I never saw her in the department before.”

“That doesn’t mean anything. Maybe she works a different shift or you never noticed her before,” the woman muttered, more to herself than to the girl.

“With her face, I woulda noticed.”

“Why?”

“Not very pretty, like her face got in an accident or something.”

“What else? Young, old? White?”

“Taller’n me. Maybe not as old as you. Some kind of Oriental, I guess.”

“Skinny?”

“I guess. Why?” the girl asked.

“Oh, just wondering. Anything else going on there at Mercy?”

“Just all those infections. Some new girl got busted for not washing her hands.” The girl giggled. “I guess she’s a nose picker and the patients got a bunch of infections from that.”

“What are you laughing at?” the woman demanded from the girl. “Infections aren’t funny.”

“I guess not, but it just seems funny that there’s infections from pickin’ noses.”

The girl was dismissed. Seconds later, the woman picked up the phone.

“We need to meet.”

She slammed the phone down again.
