SEVENTEEN
There was silence for several seconds, and I began to think Lily Davidson had hung up while I was talking. Then there was an intake of breath, so I listened a moment longer.
âChaplain, let me tell you why I really don't care. That man was married to my mother. He had swept her off her feet in high school, promised her his undying love and devotion, married her the day after graduation and then enlisted in the Army. Four months later, he was shipped off to Vietnam, and my mother was left at home to fend for herself. Two weeks after he was deployed, she discovered she was pregnant with my brother. For two long years, while he stayed there for a second tour of duty, she waited for him to come home, just as loving and faithful wife as you could ever imagine.
âNow, I want you to think about what it did to her, years and years later, when she found out that the reason he stayed for that second tour was because he had a lover over there that he didn't want to leave. It broke her heart, and she never recovered. They divorced, but my mother suffered from depression for the last six years of her life, and finally took her own life to bring it to an end. Goodbye, Chaplain. Please don't call me again.â
The line went dead, and I sat there in shock. Amos had told me that Ed and his wife had divorced, but apparently he didn't know the rest of the story. I could understand Lily's animosity, but it troubled me that she was blaming her mother's weakness on her father. Yes, it's a terrible thing that her mother committed suicide. However, that was a choice her mother made. I don't believe that there is ever a situation that can justify it, and while a broken heart can be a terrible thing, it takes more than that to bring a person that low. Lily's mother had problems of her own, that was certain, or she never would have resorted to such a final solution.
I tried to make myself see it from Lilyâs point of view, but it wasn't easy. I knew about loss; I had lost my own wife. I knew about depression, too, because I had sunk into the pits of despair after Nervy died. I had turned my back on God and my calling, turned my back on everyone and everything except my son and his family. I had left the Army and come to Alpena to simply shut out the world, and grow old and die.
As I sat there thinking about those days, my heart began to ache. Even now, more than two years later, I still miss Nervy. There are moments when I still expect her to come walking into the room, and when I realize that she's gone and never coming back, there are still times when the tears well up and I simply can't hold it in.
