Keane remembered the days and weeks that followed like scenes from a movie, more as something that he had watched rather than something that had actually happened to him. He had called 911 and waited in growing terror until the Maryland Natural Resources Police arrived in a single small boat. After that, things quickly escalated.

More DNR police arrived, and then the state police. Keane had been taken ashore and questioned, first with sympathy, and then with growing suspicion.

Even Keane knew that it was highly unlikely that his wife had simply vanished.

When he tried to explain about the lights they had seen, no one was interested in his descriptions of the will o’ wisps, except as it related to his sobriety.

"How much did you two have to drink last night?"

"We shared a bottle of wine, but I don't think we finished it."

"Any drugs?"

Keane recoiled. "No, of course not!"

The bottle of wine was found, there on the blanket. They had polished off a little over half the bottle. Embarrassed, Keane had been forced to explain about them making love.

"Did things maybe get a little rough?" the state police detective had wanted to know. His name was Crawford. This was the same detective that Keane had just seen again in St. Michaels at the Cannonball House.

"Dear God, no."

"But then you went below and did it again?"

He’d been forced to share the story with more than one investigator. Somehow, the details of what had been a romantic evening seemed to become more sordid with each retelling.

A theory began to evolve that his wife had too much to drink and had fallen overboard in the dark. Maybe she had hit her head in the process. Keane must have slept right through it.

There was also the possibility that Amanda had been more depressed than Keane had realized about their inability to have children. The theory that Amanda had committed suicide was something that the police didn’t seem to put much stock in, but Keane wasn’t so sure. He doubted that Amanda had intentionally drowned herself. But if she had gone overboard by accident, it was just possible that her melancholy had been like chains around her legs, making her give up too easily on life. Keane felt deeply guilty that he might not have seen these signs and tried to help her. He felt even worse about the fact that maybe she had fallen in, and that he’d been too drowsy from wine and sex to hear the splash and her cries for help. In her time of need, he had failed her.

Search parties combed the marsh, in case she had gone overboard and swam toward shore. Nothing was found.

Another explanation arose, which was that Keane had killed her. No one came out and accused him directly, but he sensed it in some of the looks he was getting. Maybe the husband did it. Keane was no expert, but he knew from reading crime novels and watching TV shows that the husband was often the first person that the police looked at in cases like this.
