Chapter 15

“Sell my shares! You must be out of your mind!” Katherine paced up and down the living room. “The answer is NO!, Peter. NO! You have got yourself into this mess, now you get yourself out of it.”

“I need the money Katherine,” he pleaded.

“Then sell some of your own shares.”

“You know that I can't do that. The amount that I need to sell, means that I will lose control of the company.”

“That's just to bad.” Katherine's voice was harsh and unsympathetic.

“If I lose control, the factory will go to the wall.”

Katherine stopped pacing up and down and glared at him. “That might not be a bad thing.”

Peter's face flushed with anger. “That's a damn stupid thing to say. Do you want to end up living in a tent in some field?”

“Don't be so dramatic,” hissed Katherine.

Peter poured himself a glass of whisky. He struggled to calm his anger. “I don't know what has happened to you, Katherine. You used to be a kind and loving person. I'm your husband. You should be standing by me.”

“Standing by you!” raged Katherine. “Do you mean, like the way that you have stood by me and the children? What kind of husband disappears for days at a time and jumps into bed with other women?”

Peter slammed his empty glass on to the bar. “Not that record again?”

“Yes that record!” spat Katherine.

“You know that they are just rumours.”

“Are they really, Peter? I'd think more of you if you told the truth.”

Peter put his hand on her shoulder. She angrily shrugged it off.

“Look darling,” he said calmly. “You are my wife. I love you. There is no one else, I promise.”

Katherine's angry eyes bored into his. “That's a load of rubbish and you know it. You are only after my shares. Well, the answer is still NO!”

Peter's eyes blazed in fury as he pointed angrily at her. “You will regret this Katherine.” He hissed. He turned on his heels and stormed out of the house to his car. He revved the engine to screaming pitch. Then wheels screaming on the drive and smoke billowing from the tyres, he careered down the drive. Katherine watched with some amusement from the window. A faint, smug expression on her face.

Peter had one last chance to find the money. He would have to go cap in hand to Arthur Jordan at Aztec, and ask for payment up front. It was useless trying to get more money from the bank. He'd had a tough time negotiating with them to buy the extra stock. There was no way that they would agree to lend more money.

Tyres squealing, Peter roared through the factory gates and screeched to a halt. He flung open his secretary's office door. “Get Arthur Jordan on the phone and put it through to the boardroom,” he barked. Before Margaret could answer, he was gone.

He settled himself in his chair, impatiently drumming his fingers on the table. He snatched up the phone as soon as it rang.

“Mr Jordan for you Mr Milton” said Margaret timidly.
