Thirty minutes later, after I’m almost certain Grandpa’s asleep in his recliner, I retrace my steps back to the living room. As expected, his eyes are closed, mouth agape, a line of drool trickling down one corner of his mouth. Every few seconds, a small snoring sound escapes his throat.

Carefully, I remove the gun from his hands, which fall slack onto his lap, and prop the shotgun against the wall in a far, shadowed corner. But before turning out the lights, I tiptoe to the edge of Grandpa’s recliner and bend down to kiss him on the cheek. “Goodnight,” I whisper.

“They’re coming,” he mumbles, so soft I almost miss it.

Then, a moment later: “Don’t worry. I’ll keep you safe.”

With a sigh, I turn away, even if some part of me wishes to stay, listening to catch some hint to his past while he dreams. I shouldn’t think too much about it. He probably can’t even remember what he had for dinner. But somehow, just like Scarlett, I can’t help but wonder how much I really know about the man I call Grandpa.
