‘Anybody found anything useful?’

‘I’m not sure I’d know if I had, Guv.’ Maitland leaned back with his hands tucked behind his head. ‘All I’ve read so far is file after file about people SHEP has been keeping tabs on. Although why SHEP is holding files on people is beyond me. I’d have thought it would be more Police Scotland’s thing.’

‘There’s always the possibility that this was a little side project for Bryce,’ said Marcus, ‘rather than something he was pursuing in an official capacity.’

‘That does seem more likely,’ said Bernard. ‘If it’s one of Bryce’s friends that has made these files public, what do you think he or she is expecting us to do with them? Do they want us to publish them?’

Maitland frowned. ‘But we don’t know who these people are or what they’re supposed to have done, so how could we do anything with the info?’

‘Well, we’ll have to put our discussion on the subject on hold. I need you to take a break from trawling the files and come with me.’

‘Where are we going, Guv?’

‘A food bank. I got a call from my son’s girlfriend—’

‘Your son who’s a police officer?’ asked Bernard.

‘Both his sons are police officers, loser.’ Maitland joined in. ‘Is it the one that’s in Glasgow or the one in the Met, Guv?’

‘Will the pair of you shut up with the questions! My son who’s in the Met is in town and his girlfriend is volunteering at a food bank today, and apparently they recently had a large donation of goods which Liz thinks came from our lorry.’

‘How could she possibly know that?’ Maitland looked sceptical.

‘Because they opened one of the boxes and it was full of after dinner chocolates wrapped in special labels celebrating their attendance at the V8 Supper.’ He grinned. ‘No wonder Carlotta’s keen to get them back. What a bloody waste of taxpayers’ money. So, let’s grab a couple of the pool cars and pick up the boxes before anyone tips off the Citizen and Cassandra Doom gets her mitts on this story.’

‘Ehm, Mr Paterson, when you said you needed everyone to come with you, were you meaning me as well?’ Marcus looked hopeful.

‘Can you carry a box without arsing it up, Marcus?’

‘I think so, Mr Paterson.’

‘Then come on.’

Marcus grinned. ‘Many hands make light work.’

‘He’s not going to be quoting the Bible the whole time he’s with us, is he, Guv?’

‘Ah, Maitland, that’s a common error. It’s not actually a biblical quote, it’s a proverb—’

‘Bernard.’ Paterson had suddenly swung round in his direction, making him jump.

‘Yes, Mr Paterson?’

‘Marcus is in your car.’

‘I have to say, Bernard, that food banks do wonderful work.’ Giddy with the excitement of being liberated from the office, Marcus had not stopped talking since they got into the car. ‘With food prices the way they are, there’s a whole section of society who wouldn’t be sure where their next meal was coming from if it wasn’t for these kinds of operations. I have to say I feel a little bit of shame when I think about them.
