CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Vikki walked into Shop Rite, got a cart, and traveled from aisle to aisle, searching for baked ziti ingredients. She craved it and wanted to make it from scratch—pasta, minced beef, parsley, basil, et cetera.

Before leaving work, Gomez glanced at her screen and said, “You’re not thinking of driving to Castleton, New York, are you?”

“I just want a rough idea of how far it is before evidence demands we go there.” Vikki had pointed at the screen. "It’s like a three-hour drive from here.”

“Exactly what I’m saying. Do you think he drove three hours to St. Ives, murdered his estranged wife, then drove back? What’s his motive after five years?”

Vikki had shrugged. “We agreed money was stolen. Mallory knows his stuff. That’s an excellent motive, especially when you don’t have any. Then there are the spousal rights. Plus, he can claim Richard Junior for tax benefits. Even though Jessica had a will, if he sued, they’d be wrapped in litigation that might take years to resolve.”

Gomez had nodded. “Then their lawyers would advise them to find common ground. So out of thin air, he pulls out some settlement. And lives happily ever after.”

Vikki had glanced up at him and winked. “That is, assuming we don’t get him for murder.”

“Find out where he lives,” Gomez had said. “If he’s living large, I’ll rule him out. If he’s in a trailer park, we must find out what he was doing between eight and nine last night.”

Vikki already knew he was not living large. The company he worked for had its headquarters in Seattle, where the big shots lived. But Reid was in New York.

She’d searched the DMV database and found Richard Reid of Castleton, NY. Her eyes had almost popped out of their sockets. “Gomez, you won’t believe this. Mr. Reid does live in a trailer park.”

The words that flew out of Gomez’s mouth would make a nun blush and a high schooler laugh.

Vikki smiled as she remembered. She was pulled out of her reverie when a woman shopping next to her glanced at her, then exited the aisle hurriedly.

Vikki found herself in the magazine aisle. She noticed the newspaper with a picture of Jessica. The headline read: SINGLE MOTHER, MURDERED.

Despite the tragedy, she smiled. Angie does love her headlines. Vikki made herself a promise—she wouldn’t rest until whoever had murdered Jessica Reid was brought to justice.

Motherhood is tough, and not all mothers are the same. Vikki had a crappy mother. But when mothers do the right thing, and some bastard ends their life because of greed, they must pay.
