Chapter 27

I went home and slept, putting my subconscious to work on my internal questions.

Saturday afternoon Art and I headed to his place for a movie. He had kept it a secret until we got to his cozy place. We sat in our recliner chairs and started on our popcorn.

“I’ve got that Mama Mia you love so well. Why do you like it?,” he asked.

“It’s musical and it takes place in Greece. Besides, where else can you see Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan sing?”

The next question was a doozy. “Want to go to Greece and Italy?”

“Yes, I’ve never seen Greece and I didn’t get to see much of Italy when Julie and I were there in 2008. Rome was the tail end of the Europe tour. I found walking through the Vatican museum exhausting.”

“What would you like to see in Greece?”

“The acropolis, and you know, the other sites.” I expected that would cover it. “It was funny when a library patron came in and bragged he had seen the apocalypse and the apocrypha.”

“That’s a good story,” Art chuckled and then got more serious. “When you want to see Greece, I want to come too.”

I cut him off and quickly responded “Most definitely. It will be more fun that way. I’ll see if Julie wants to share a cabin.”

“Oh, does she have to come too?” He grimaced.

“Don’t pout.”

He hesitated. What’s wrong with sharing a cabin?”

“You know why.”

“This is where I would like to ask you do me the honor of marrying me. Greece would be a great honeymoon.”

“If I could get a divorce, in absentia, from Chris I would. Then I could go on with my life. I keep thinking he will come back these past four years.”

“OK, I get it. Your husband left you.”

“He didn’t leave me, he just went out on an errand and never came back.”

“I know you’ve tried to find him. But even with all your research skills, you haven’t. GIVE UP!”

“What if I hired a private investigator to locate him? Except, I don’t know where one is and he’s probably terribly expensive. What really bothers me is that he’ll want to come to town and dig in my life, question my friends, and put my marriage under a microscope. I don’t want change.” It just came out like that, the stark reality of my inflexibility.

Art said with tenderness in his voice, “I love you. Do you love me?”

Now this was, I thought, an upfront statement and question. How was I going to handle this? I contemplated my answer. If I said I loved him, things would have to change, wouldn’t they? I followed my heart.

“I love you Art.” Now what would he say? What should I say next? “I’ve tried to ignore my feelings for some time. Funny how those words are so hard to say.”

“What’s hard about it?”

“I don’t know. If I say I love you, things will change between us and I have been comfortable the way they are.”

“If you love me, you would want to change.
