Chapter 7 – Bill & Nancy

“Norman, you simpering fool. What the hell you mean they got away?” a loud wet smack preceded a shocked gasp and Norm’s body hitting the floor.

“Damn Bill, did you kill him?” Nancy asked.

“Shit. I don’t know, let me check. No, he still has a pulse.”

“If we didn’t need the info he has I would have sucked him dry by now.” Nancy told her husband.

“I know. This is the 2nd time I’ve screwed up and forgotten how strong we’ve gotten.” Bill said.

“I know. It happened to me once in the lab. One of our “rats” tried to make a break for the door when the airlock opened and I was the closest. I ended up grabbing him by the arm and accidentally tore the whole thing off.”

“Did the “rat” die?”

“No, but we got to see how the serum reacted to a major trauma. In the end we had to amputate and cauterize. I hated wasting good blood to keep that lice infested human alive. That was my dinner!”

“It seems we both have a lot to learn.”

“Yes, it never ends does it? First school, college, our doctorates and everything comes crashing down. I’m just glad Francesco made the deal. I haven’t felt so young and alive in years.”

“I know what you mean. I just wish we could have found Tres when Francesco decided to change us...”

“I know. Sometimes, that still hurts. That’s why we sent that weak rat Jake out with the swarm blood.”

“I know. But it still sucks. It was only a 50/50 chance of getting Tres back to us alive. I don’t like those odds. Never did, to tell you the truth.” Bill said.

“I hate to say it, but he’s in good hands right now. Brice will keep him safe. We have to figure out a way to eliminate the zombie issue and finish our work off here so we can move onto the next city. Tres will be coming with us..”

“Yeah, we can always hope for the best. When Francesco finds out what a mess this area is in now we’ll be lucky he doesn’t string us up and leave us in the sun.”

“He can’t do that honey, we’ve perfected the serum, but I will not release the recipe for it until we’ve achieved a semblance of normalcy with our new lives. We are much more valuable being in the position to provide it for their blood banks.”

“Yeah, and while we’re on that topic Bill, ours is running low on food.”

“What? We have close to 300 people up there. We can’t run out of blood.”

“No, not blood, I am talking about food for the norms. We have to do something soon. With the National Guardsmen and your “employees” who guard us during the daytime, we have barely enough food left on the base to last us two weeks.”

That got Bill’s attention. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you are from, living or dead.. You still have to eat. This was turning into a logistical nightmare that neither of them had looked at until now.
