“Would you like some more coffee?”

I looked up from my screen. I’d been taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi connection at The Pig and Pepper for a good hour, lingering over a long-cold cup of coffee.

Wootton waggled his coffee pot over my mug.

“No,” I told him, “I’d better not.” I knew how much money I had in my purse. Or didn’t have. What was there had to last.

“It’s on the house.” Before I could protest, he had filled my mug to the brim. “If you want a vodka, you’ll have to pay for it though.”

I grinned. “What does the landlord think of you giving away free coffee?” I asked.

He shrugged. “What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.” He edged out the chair next to mine with his foot and took a seat. “Honestly, he makes a mint on this place.”

“Does he?” I looked around doubtfully. It never seemed that busy whenever I visited. Ironically, that’s why I liked it. I wouldn’t be hit on by desperate men looking for a good time. Something they were unlikely to get in my company. This morning, I’d figured the pub would be quieter than my flat.

“Yeah, he does. He waters down the beer and pays the staff peanuts. Trust me. He’s doing fine.”

Wootton met my eyes. I studied his face. He had pixie features, I realised. Slightly curved eyes curling upwards, a slight point to the ears, a thin nose. But he was handsome. Porcelain skin and white, even teeth, dark floppy hair and the makings of a beard.

And far too young for me.

“Are you chatting me up?” I came straight to the point.

He gasped. I couldn’t decide whether that was out of genuine shock or whether he was putting it on. “Hell no, Grandma.”

It was my turn to be taken aback. “I’m not that old!”

“Not far off.” He crooked an eyebrow at me. “No point in faux outrage.”

“You cheeky monkey!” I stared at him, agog at his nerve.

He chortled and all of a sudden, we were laughing together. I narrowed my eyes at him. “Just watch it,” I muttered.

“I’m Wootton.” He held out his hand and I shook it.

“Elise Liddell.”

“What are you doing?” He leaned over to read my notes. “Shopping?”

Closing my notebook, I affected an air of superiority. “None of your business.”

He cocked his head to get a better look at my computer screen. “Knives?”

I slapped the lid of the laptop down. “Do you mind?”

“You’re not shopping for knives. You’re investigating Wizard Dodo’s murder, right?” His voice, a little loud, carried through the quiet pub.

Out of habit, I looked around, wanting to see if anyone was listening. “Keep your voice down,” I hissed.

“Why?” he wanted to know. “Is it a secret?”

“It’s not a secret. I just don’t want everyone to know.”

“Ah, gotcha.” He reached out to pull my notebook towards him. “I’m good at murder mysteries. I could help.”

I slapped at his hand. “What do you mean, you’re good at murder mysteries?”

“Like detective stories. Books. Movies. Television. I’ve watched all the CSI re-runs on Witchflix.
