Chapter 12

To prepare for taking the national guard base, we go to a small mountain town to collect supplies and weapons. While we clear and secure the base, the residents of Zion will be instructed to remain inside.

Trey’s walkie-talkie suddenly springs to life, alerting him of an incoming horde. “Get to the cars.” He said.

In a frenzied rush, we desert our loot and sprint towards the cars, but three nimble infected descending from the rooftops thwart our escape. Elliott and Leah are taken down, but Trey reacts quickly and neutralizes the third freak. By then, we’re surrounded.

“Here!”

I signal towards a secured building and with adrenaline pumping; we surge into the structure, securing the doors, for now.

Melissa grabs her husband Travis as he stumbles, and that’s when I notice it - the bite mark on his shoulder, a solitary dark vein along the side of his neck - and I fire my gun. As the bullet penetrates his head, he crumples to the ground and Melissa screams.

“You killed him.”

“He was turning.”

She holds him. “Not that fast. We had time.” I look around as everyone vigorously checks themselves, “you murdered him, he was still alive.”

“Look at his eyes. He was 10 seconds away from ripping your face off, endangering all of us.”

Trey finishes looking over everyone. “We’re out in 5. That glass won’t hold much longer.”

Melissa sobs, rocking her husband. “I’m not leaving him; he’s my husband.”

Normally, I would have shown sympathy and remorse, but we currently have 24 able-bodied undead pounding on the glass.

“Everybody has lost someone. Stop whining before you get someone killed trying to save you.”

“Casey -”

“No. There’s a time and a place, and this isn’t it. You can stay and get killed while you let her have a moment, but I’m not, and I’m not letting them get killed, either.” I turn back to Melissa, “suck it up or stay, but we’re out in 5.”

Beth leans over to examine Travis’s eyes. “Casey’s right. I’m with her on this. His eyes were bleeding. I’m sorry, Melissa, but I’m not staying around to get torn to pieces. We can have a ceremony, but we can’t stay.”

The glass cracks and the infected see it, punching and body slamming the splintering glass. Toby covers Melissa’s husband with a coat and lends a hand to help her stand.

“We have to go Melissa.”

Trey and Chris lead the way to the fire exit. From there, we can make a run for our vehicles. Beth and I take up the rear, watching the glass spiderweb. An infected punches through the glass as Trey cracks open the door, peering out.

Trey looks at the front glass as an undead tears its flesh off to squeeze through the hole it created. I shoot it down, and it’s torn out for a new one to emerge, hands grabbing at the glass.

“There’s about a dozen outside. Everyone get ready.”

Beth fires at another and it goes down. Trey and Chris burst out the door, shooting, and the front window shatters. As everyone flees the shop, Melissa turns to look at us and the undead swarm in.
