Chapter 5
DAY LAY naked against Knight. This should feel strange as hell, lying naked next to his work partner. But it didn’t. Granted, if the powers that be at work found out what they’d been doing on this “work” cruise, the whole partner thing would probably change fast, along with their employment status. Dammit, he needed to focus and pull away from his stupid worries for the moment. “You don’t have to tell me.”
Knight moaned softly. “You can knock off the passive-aggressive shit. It’s annoying.” Knight turned toward Day.
Day had already noticed that when Knight wanted to hide from the world, he played ostrich with the whole “arm over his eyes” thing. He pulled the arm away and turned toward Knight.
“If I hear a sigh or see any signs of it or some other nonsense, I’ll…,” Knight said.
“You’ll what?”
“I’ll heave you over the railing and tell everyone you could no longer live with your assholeness.” He sounded serious. “Either that or I’ll say you were a spy and I dumped you over to keep you from spilling government secrets.”
Day rolled his eyes. “You’re the ass, not me.”
“They don’t know that.”
“Okay, as long as we agree who’s the ass, I got it. No pity or feeling sorry for you.” He wanted to smile but kept it off his face. Knight was being serious in his own mock-threatening way. Whatever had happened had affected him deeply. Day quieted and lay on the bed, the ship rocking gently, the sun shining in the open curtains. He should have been relaxed and drifting off to sleep in such an otherwise peaceful atmosphere, but instead he was on edge.
“I was nineteen. I had left home and was on leave after boot camp,” Knight said. “I got two weeks. The other guys were going home to see their families. But I wasn’t going to do that. I had gotten away and didn’t see any need to return to my father’s scrutiny. So I stayed in San Diego with one of the other guys. Mark and I had been friends of a sort, and he found himself in a similar situation to me. So we got a small place and figured we’d spend a couple weeks doing nothing on the beach.” Knight didn’t look at him, and Day kept quiet. He didn’t want to interrupt the flow of the story.
“Mark was a great guy.” Knight rolled his head on the pillow. “He was injured in Iraq five years ago and lost his legs. I went to see him after that, and he wasn’t the same. No one knew what to do for him, and his parents were beside themselves. He took his own life a few weeks later because he could never see himself as a complete man after that.”
Knight returned to looking at the ceiling. It must have been easier for him not to make eye contact, even though Day wished he would.
“He had an old car, so one morning, we took a buzz up the coast to Venice.
