Stephen pulled into the driveway of the home Paige had purchasedâthe Mynart home. The sun was setting and cast a beautiful hue of orange and purple colors across the sky. The bright orange sun was already starting to disappear behind the tree line. He just needed to find that silver phone. He knew he had it in his hand when he got shot, so it should be somewhere in the house.
He knew this house would be empty. Paige was still missing. He saw in the file they had a deal with the Brighton Police Department. They were keeping tabs on the house and so far, there had been no movement.
Another memory came to him as he climbed the stairs to the porch. He had installed cameras around the home that he could still monitor on his phone. He pulled it out of his pocket and looked at it. The hospital had reissued it to him when he was discharged. It had been with his personal effects. Going through a yearâs worth of data would be a different story. The task sounded overwhelming. He made a mental note to check the cam activity outside the house. Sounded like a good project to do while on light duty.
He knew Paige well enough to know that wherever she was, she did not want to be found. Still, he proceeded with caution. Stephen used a small screwdriver on a pocketknife he was carrying to open the door in less than a minute. It was a fun trick he had picked up at the academy. This, he also remembered how to do. More and more things were coming back to him.
He flipped on the lights. Strong déjà vu hit him again. Suddenly, he was back to the night when heâd almost lost his life. If he believed in God, he might take a minute to thank him or her. It was pretty miraculous he had woken up.
The trash bags full of Paigeâs things were still there around the room, some full, some half empty. Nothing had been touched since that night.
âThey must not have thought any of this stuff was evidence,â Stephen was talking to himself. Typically, in a homicide, everything suspected of having evidence would be bagged and taken in.
A big blood spot had stained the floor in front of the bedroom where Jason Mynart had been murdered twenty years ago. The same room where Paige Deffer had almost been a target, and where he had almost lost his life. It was his blood that stained the wood floor. He glanced around the room near that spot and saw no silver phone.
Stephen stepped over the blood stain and went into the bedroom. A smear of blood also stained the wall. Rayâs blood. He scanned the room. He looked under the bed. He looked in the bathroom. There was no silver phone.
Now he turned his attention to the living room and the plastic bags. What were in these bags anyway? Stephen started dumping them out. Piles of clothes that smelled like Paige began to litter the floors.
