Chapter 13

Game On

Stevie put on his favorite jeans and sleeveless T-shirt for the skate comp. Already there was interest in the competition amongst his friends. Mary Lou had promised to come and watch him, and Bren Lee was going. He would help Stevie prepare. Devlin Hood had asked Jem to accompany him and Stevie had not protested. He had enough to worry about and he knew arguing with Jem would just push him further away.

Aunt Bessie would also come, with his mum and dad. He felt comforted by that. For days he had been searching for a way out of performing the 900, but it was useless. If another competitor performed it, he would have to do better but the premonition there was danger in the 900, was uppermost in his mind.

As he put on his wristband and reached for his competition skateboard, he instinctively touched his Illuminator stone and uttered a silent prayer. “Please, God, or whatever you are, show me a way to beat Devlin Hood.” It was at that moment Stevie got a mental image of the wind. He knew somehow it was the key. Grabbing his gear he made his way down the stairs, two at a time.

“Mum, Mum, are you ready? We’ve got to go.”

Sylvia Vegas appeared from behind the kitchen door.

“OK, Stevie, keep that shirt of yours on. Let’s get you there then.”

The drive to the skatepark was as quick as his mum dared to go. Stevie noticed that she seemed just as nervous as he felt. Only Aunt Bessie remained relatively calm.

“Remember, Stevie, let go of doubt and trust your mind’s voice.”

Stevie nodded in the darkness. “I’ll try,” was all he could manage.

When they got to the skatepark the crowds were gathering. On one side of the huge ramps Valley Dale had installed only last year, was Devlin Hood’s camp. Stevie could just make out Jem’s face in the crowd. He smiled and waved to him, determined not to be rattled by Devlin’s games. He noticed Mary Lou’s father there too. Shadowcasters, he thought to himself, and where were the Barrons? That would have made the picture complete, he thought, with a sinking feeling. He was just about to give into certain defeat, even before the competition had started, when he caught sight of Mary Lou and Bren Lee. He hurried over to them, eager to be amongst friends.

“Hi, Stevie. Are you ready for the skate?” Bren Lee asked, searching Stevie’s face for any telltale signs of fear. Bren Lee knew that Devlin Hood and his followers needed this victory tonight, to unseat Stevie’s confidence…and fear always led to a downward spiral in confidence.

“I’m fine…you know, a little nervous but that’s the way it is before a big comp.”

He turned to Mary Lou. In the gathering shadows he noticed she had on a sky blue skirt and white T-shirt.

“Hey, what gives? Where’s the leathers?” He laughed, despite himself.

With a mock twirl, she said, “It’s all for you, Stevie Vegas. I could hardly come
