CHAPTER 18

A DARK AND TWISTED BACKSTORY

After Elide found out Maven could speak Icelandic, that was all he wanted to do. They spoke about apprentice hood, their likes and dislikes, the kingdom and the differences between Earth and Aurora. It was fun for them, and only allowed their friendship to grow more.

It was a sunny day outside, even though everything was covered in snow. Elide and Maven had been walking and talking through the castle, when she noticed a balcony that showed the perfect view of the village below. She stepped outside, shivering slightly as the wind nipped at her face. She rested her arms on the railing, gazing at the view. Elide took his place next to her. “You know, I don’t know how you do it,” he said.

“You just had to ruin the silence, didn’t you?” Maven said, smiling at him.

Elide laughed, but went back to his question, “I mean, you haven’t been here for that long, and yet you act like you’ve lived here all your life. You had to leave your old, simple life behind to rule a kingdom you never knew existed and fight a war you don’t even want to fight in the first place. And yet, somehow, you get through it. How?”

Maven kept looking out. The smile never left her face, “It’s because, well…I don’t think I’ve ever felt this happy and safe for a long time.”

“What do you mean?”

Maven sighed. “When I moved to Iceland to live with my grandma, none of my friends from Arizona ever called to check up on me. Every once in a while they would text back ‘How have you been?’, but they never really cared that much. Which really sucked since I didn’t really have anyone to comfort me while my dad and Lysandra were away in Mexico. Or here, I guess. And even the both of them stopped calling and texting me after a while. After that, I just sort of gave up in a way.

I felt lost and broken. Like no one else in the world cared. Now I’m going to lose him,” Maven’s eyes started to tear up. She hugged herself, keeping her eyes focused on the town below. “Then I come here and…I know I’m supposed to be freaking out about all of this other dimensional stuff, and I still kind of am. But not as much as I thought I would. This place- seeing Lysandra and my dad again. Meeting you and Warrick. It made me feel not so alone anymore. I feel like I can finally breathe again! Like I don’t have to worry about it because I know now that I’m not going to be alone.”

It was like Elide was seeing her in a new light. He always knew that with her dad being sick it was really upsetting to her, but he never thought that she would ever want to be here. Elide thought she might at least miss Arizona. He wanted to make her feel better. He wanted to assure her that everything was going to be okay.
