CARA

“Ibrought pizza!” Isobel announced in a loud, singsong voice.

Cara turned from her painting to see Isobel stroll through the gallery with a large, thin box in her hands. She breathed in the savory aroma of baked bread and cheese and garlic. Her stomach growled, the satisfying fullness of dinner having faded hours ago.

“I was driving by the gallery and saw the light on. I figured you wouldn’t mind a little break, especially of the melted cheese variety,” Isobel said.

“You know the way to a woman’s heart!” Cara laughed.

Isobel glanced around the room. “I really need to get a table and chairs or something for out here. Do you want to go back to the office?”

Cara put down her paints and plopped down on the floor. “Nah, this is fine. Makes me feel like I’m a kid again, sitting on the floor of your mom’s house, watching scary movies.”

Isobel laughed and sat down beside her. “We were way too young for some of those.”

“Right? Does she still have that orange shag carpet?”

“Eww, no. That stuff was the color of this pizza. Papi installed wood floors years ago.”

They ate and reminisced until they were both full. Isobel looked out the front windows and shook her head. “Ugh, those lights across the street are obnoxious. It’s like, okay, we get it, Lochlan Gallery, you’re a big deal,” she said, rolling her eyes.

“He’s really not that bad,” Cara said.

“I know you’re in that contest of his and I’m happy for you career-wise, really, but ‘not that bad’? He’s so pretentious. Did he put a spell on you or something?” Isobel joked.

“Um, I hope not,” Cara said awkwardly. “Hey, this may sound like a random question, but do you know if Texas has seals? I remember reading about native seals in science class when I was a kid.”

“Should have been history class. The Gulf of Mexico was once home to a species of monk seal I think, but their population was decimated when European settlers arrived. My abuela used to tell of how she saw one when she was young—called it a sea wolf, but who knows? Officially, they’ve been extinct for decades. Why do you want to know?” Isobel said.

Before Cara could answer, a knocking sounded from the front door. The front of the gallery was all glass, but neither Cara nor Isobel saw anyone there at the door.

“You heard that, right?” Cara asked. Isobel nodded. The knocking continued.

“Did you lock the door?” Isobel asked.

“I came in the back. I never touched the front door,” Cara said.

“We’re closed. Come back tomorrow!” Isobel shouted.

The knocking stopped for a few seconds before starting up again. Cara stood and walked cautiously to the front door. She peered through the glass and then turned back to Isobel. “No one’s there.”

Tap, tap, tap. Cara glanced down and saw a single raven standing on the other side of the glass. The bird cocked its head and looked up at her. Its eye glowed like a hot coal. Then it struck
