Sean and I played one-on-one basketball in his driveway after school. “Sean, I told you to give me whatever needs to go in the laundry,” his mother called, leaning out the door.

“Mom, we’ve got a game going. Just take whatever needs it.” “How do I know?” she asked. “It’s all on the floor.”

“If it’s on the floor, it needs it.”

She went back in the house, shaking her head. Twenty minutes later we were standing in front of Sean’s open refrigerator, taking turns drinking orange juice from the carton. Sean’s mother walked into the kitchen and leveled her gaze at him. Her eyes were fierce. Sean swung the fridge door shut. “What?”

She just stood there staring. “David had better go,” she said emphatically, without glancing in my direction.

“Why?”

“Sean? Did you hear me?”

“Whoa, look at the time,” I said. It must be bad if she had to send me home before she started yelling at him. “Getting late,” I mumbled. Sean followed as I darted for the front door. “What’s going on?” I whispered.

“She’s pissed about something.”

“Call me.”

As Sean disappeared behind the door, I shivered to think of him returning to face his mother. That was one scary look.
