The Anniversary

It’s not everyday your wife takes you to an exorcism.let alone yours. Anne Woods, Mrs. Woods, was always a strange woman. But I’m a strange man and our relationship is equally odd. For years before the twins, she and I would indulge in Disney cartoons and mescaline. The innocence was her thing…imagining a time when she was pure. Dumb fucked me up…the elephants in the musical number don’t have any eyes.

When she was a nurse and she would fix morphine with me. The great thing about morphine was she was a nurse and could pilfer synthetic opium. I of course am a Psychiatrist…I could get the real stuff. I write on the side. About all the sick fucks, I see. Usually it was easier to get it from her work.

My name is John Woods…Lindsey grew up just next door to my families home. You haven’t heard of me because I have yet to break through to mainstream writing where I could use my real name. For now, a nom de plume will have to suffice. My most famous piece is where I insinuate a homosexual relationship between Barney and Fred…Bam Bam has issues with Dino. Wilma is an alcoholic and Betty is dumber than a post but that was a given.

This morning after a night of role-play with no safe word, Lindsey wakes up with puke stains and a black eye. The room reeks from the whiskey bottle smashed on the wall. A glass pipe sits on the end table. Eerily, the menu of Alice in Wonderland plays. Lindsey isn’t one for threesomes so it is violence that gets her going. It’s out anniversary and the kids are with her parents. We think no one has a clue but we are in fact the clueless ones. When your wife goes jogging every day with you and every once and a while she’s sporting a shiner and a smile…neighbors tend to get it. It’s nothing that hasn’t been done before it’s is just a little out of place but Mary Kay makes a good mask. Mrs. O’Leary got a pink caddie from our sales alone.

Most days it’s a quick run for me alone. Anne takes the kids to school and herself to work. As I said earlier today is our anniversary. Today is special. We are renewing our vows at sunset at the country club. Quite the reception it will be. For weeks, we had been planning it. The ceremony would be on the anniversary of our first date, Halloween. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata replaced the wedding march. Sunflowers instead of roses, black instead of white…you get the picture.

After the raucous night, Anne enjoyed cleaning the house quietly. I poured bags of candy into a metal bathtub on the lawn for the neighborhood children. There was far too much for one group to hoard all of the candy.

Beauty never had a black eye so shinny. I would say she was a real Irish girl but her family was from Poland. Sitting
