JACK

Jack felt numb as he merged off the freeway and turned toward the abandoned pharmaceutical Research & Development facility where the Spades queen held court. There had been only one response he’d expected when he suggested Aggie choose him as king: of course. He had just assumed she would pick him. That all the feelings they shared, not to mention his rank and experience, would make him the obvious choice. The fact that she had reservations stung like a slap. And yet he should have known it wouldn’t be easy. Nothing with Aggie was. She was cerebral, a classic overthinker. He just had to hope that all her reasoning would lead her back to him.

In the meantime, he’d do what he’d always done for the women in his life: prove himself useful.

He found Shade in the parking lot of the Spades hideout, talking with a couple members of his former gang—who had now become his sycos. As Jack got out of the car, Shade was holding a red gas can and pouring hex into it, the palm of his hand pulsing. When he was finished, he placed the gas can in the trunk of his friends’ black Impala and gave the driver a fist bump. The other crew members gave Jack the side-eye as they got into their vehicle, but no one said anything. As they pulled out of the lot, Jack approached Shade and they stood together, watching the vehicle pull away.

“The work,” Shade said, flexing and unflexing his hand, looking down at the dark mark on its palm. “It’s better than any dope I’ve ever seen, man.”

Jack nodded thoughtfully, still watching the black car as it rounded a corner and disappeared. Ever since he’d become a Spade, Shade had been conducting a crusade of arson against the multi-national chain stores, restaurants and real estate operations that had been springing up in his old neighborhood, their competition driving up rents and driving out local businesses. One by one, the interlopers had gone up in flames.

It was a savage way to defeat gentrification, but Jack had to respect Shade’s initiative. He was not only defending his neighborhood and its people, he was also building up hex power in the process. Jack could feel the strength rolling off him, a hex considerably greater than would be normal in a luck god of his rank.

“Where you been?” Shade asked, his tone more curious than probing.

Jack saw no reason to lie. “With the Hearts,” he said.

“Is her Majesty’s daughter okay?”

“Yes,” Jack said.

Shade nodded. “She’ll be glad to hear that.”

That was another thing about Shade. He seemed truly grateful for the power Queen Rachel had bestowed on him, and from what Jack could tell, he was completely loyal. It was a code of the streets, Shade had told him once. When you join a gang, you have their backs all the way to the grave.

Jack knew Shade was leery of him, though. The idea of being in two gangs at once was antithetical to Shade’s world view.
