Chapter 6

Maura woke as the sun set. She’d been unmotivated to get up and dress all day. The cat remained curled against her chest, keeping her company. A clogged congestion had taken up residence behind her eyes and nose leaving her loggy with a general unwell feeling enhanced with intermittent bouts of sneezing when she’d periodically woken throughout the day.

The cat rolled onto its side and began a change. Hopefully not into the very large, very hungry looking predatory beast again. Naked Zelia was a refreshing sight when the change finished. Maura couldn’t resist the woman, despite what her good sense told her. When Zelia looked up from the bed with eyes pooled with tears, Maura scrambled to comfort her, forgetting her own misery.

“I’ve tried all day to initiate a change and been unable to. I was stuck in that form. And yet, once I’m in a different form and desire to stay there, the gods torment me and thrust me into the change to what I don’t desire.”

“Shhh, I’m here Zelia, we’ll figure this out together.” Maura pulled the soft blanket over the shivering woman and pulled her into an embrace. Stroking her back, she muttered soothing sounds and words without meaning, hoping to comfort her. Touching her skin fed the fire of need she felt each time she neared the Tracker.

When Zelia neared, Maura’s mind filled with the woman’s presence as significant as her warrioress body filled the room. She was still Maura in her head but a sense of other was there that didn’t otherwise exist. Almost like something missing had been returned and Maura regained her balance for the first time in eons. Whatever was happening, it felt good and right. More right to Maura than anything had felt for a very long time.

“Zelia, I can’t explain what’s happening, please.”

The warm lips against her neck answered the three words she’d wanted to hear. “I need you.”

Maura couldn’t think clear beyond the feel of her skin against Zelia’s. She looked down at the beautiful Tracker, to memorize every line of her lean, battle scared, body. Only to Maura did she reveal the soft vunerable woman she kept so tightly in check.
