I definitely couldn’t sleep after that.

When Luthor came to be, I would have told him, except his whole body was tense with anger, and Cyrus was nowhere in sight. I held my breath as Luthor heaved his boots against the wall, hard enough to leave a mark.

Luthor grumbled while he stripped off his clothes, cursed just before he slid into bed, then tossed and turned, grumbled, tossed and turned some more.

Rage radiated from him like poison, leaching into me until I was every bit as worked up. This crap had to end. Whatever was going on between him and Cyrus couldn’t continue, not when we needed to provide a united front for our enemies.

Not when this was hurting all of us.

I was on the verge of asking Luthor what in the hell was going on, when the tension drained out of the room, and he began snoring.

I stared at the ceiling for as long as I could, then crawled out of my nice warm bed, wrapped myself in a robe, and headed downstairs to find Cyrus.

All the rooms were dark and empty, and I pinched myself, just to ensure I was really awake, and this wasn’t another one of those wraith dreams. Cyrus wasn’t on the first floor. In fact, I didn’t even sense him nearby.

At Ravenswood, when I couldn’t sleep, I usually ended up in Deston’s library.

I didn't even know if the palace had a library, but I kind of doubted it, given that Viktor didn’t strike me as much of a reader.

Swinging by the kitchen, I made myself a cup of tea. Grabbed a cookie off the counter. There always seemed to be a plate of them, and I wasn't sure what magic made that happen, but I prayed it continued.

Once I was back in the grand entrance, I dithered on which way to go.

Right would take me back up the steps to the bedroom, currently inhabited by a stubborn male with a bad attitude. Hard pass.

Left, behind a set of double doors, was the abandoned west wing, sealed off from the rest of the palace. I’d meant to explore it a hundred times but never had the chance. I cleared an opening in the wards and pushed the doors open. According to Cyrus, this end was sealed off long before Queen Lyra.

From what I saw, he was right.

Neglect everywhere. Crumbled plaster ceilings lay shattered on the parquet floors, chunks of inlay missing. Antiques swollen with humidity sat below the broken windows, which let in rain and drifts of leaves.

I prowled from one end of the floor to the other, searching for anything salvageable. My heart broke at the ruined furniture, the hand-painted frescoes scattered in pieces across the floor.

On my way back to bed, an oddity caught my eye. The twin bookcases set back into an alcove looked innocuous enough.

The glowing rune above them was not.

The symbol stood out starkly against the dark wood. Its sickly, phosphorescent green glow looked like the number five, but I couldn’t be sure.
