“Detective Sergeant Sands. I’m happy to see you. Have you found Amy?”

“Miss Summers.” Sands held out a hand, which Claire duly ignored. “No, we haven’t found your sister. I’m here about a number of recent messages you left me.”

“Yeah? Well you’d better come in. Hi, Mum.”

Debbie shuffled backwards into the hallway. “Hi, love. How did it go with the reporter? Another long chat?”

“Yeah, fine. Mum, why don’t you go and make some tea?”

“Oh, yes, of course, love.”

Sands raised an eyebrow “Reporter? Talking to the press might not be a bad idea. If your sister sees the story she may decide to come home.”

Claire preferred to steer the conversation away from her meetings with Thad. She led the detective into the front room, away from the kitchen and her mother’s ear.

Sands took a notebook from his pocket and leafed through the pages. “Right. Firstly, you were concerned about Mr Woods, who I remind you, we already questioned.”

“Yes. But you failed to note that he was stuck up a tree out there taking photos through my bedroom window the morning Amy went missing.”

“You have evidence of this?”

“He admitted it. And Mrs Green saw him. She reported it. How come nobody made the connection between her report and Amy going missing?”

“Mrs Green’s report was classed as unverifiable and unreliable at the time. It would seem your neighbour has a history of making unfounded allegations. She once called to report a giant fruit bat was walking down the street smashing car windscreens. When a constable called, she admitted she was lonely and wanted someone to talk to.”

“But she was right about Marco. He admitted—”

“In light of Amy’s disappearance,” Sands continued, raising his voice and cutting her off, “and because you were so insistent, I personally paid a visit to Mr Woods this morning. He denies the story. He claims he couldn’t have been taking pictures of you because his phone was stolen anyway.”

“But—” Claire stopped herself.

“He hadn’t reported it stolen at the time. Now he has, we’ve got the network tracing it. As soon as it turns up, we can check the photos and put this whole idea to bed. Now, moving on.” Sands flipped over more pages. “Anthony Smythe, AKA Thaddeus Webb. This is a much more interesting character.”

“Why’s that?”

“Because it’s common knowledge your sister is a runaway. For Mr Webb to turn up and pretend to be someone he isn’t in order to get close to you suggests he may be invested in the crime.”

Claire felt her heart speed up. “So you do believe there’s a crime! Bloody hell, at last.”

“Oh yes, there’s definitely a crime. This so-called Sickstarter video is a criminal act. Mr Webb’s actions lead me to believe he may have knowledge of the scam.”

“I don’t get it.” Claire shook her head. “If he was behind the video, why come and see me?”

“Because you’re doing an excellent job of publicising it. Talking to the press, so your mother says. And perhaps because he gets a kick out of seeing you in turmoil over your missing sister.
