On the drive home, the phone rang and I cursed myself for my bad temper. I had no idea who was calling. The way the screen had smashed meant, from this angle, I couldn’t see clearly who was calling.

“Aaron,” I answered, picking it up and holding it loosely to my ear. The Bluetooth must have fucked up when I threw the fucking thing, which is why the truck wasn’t picking up the call.

“Hey, Ink,” Rebel’s warm cheery voice carried down the line, and I smiled.

“Hey, what can I do for you?”

“Well, I wanted to know if you thought I was a hooker or just some charity case?” Her tone was still cheerful, which clashed with what she had just said to me.

“Say what now?” I frowned in confusion. “A hooker?”

“Yeah, you left me money on the counter like you were paying me for my services.” A popping sounded in my ear.

“Are you blowing gum?”

“Yeah, what’s it to you?”

I shook my head. “Can you not do it in my fucking ear?” I asked her. “I didn’t leave you money for charity, you batshit crazy woman.” I shook my head. “I realised, as I was leaving your trailer, I hadn’t paid for my beer.”

“You left me a hundred dollars for beer?” She popped her gum again.

“Well, it wasn’t for the sex I didn’t have,” I drawled.

“Huh.” She popped her gum.

“Rebel!” I warned her.

“Okay, cool, thanks.” She hung up.

Jesus fucking Christ save me from fucking irrational women. Why the fuck would she think I thought she was a hooker? And even if she was a hooker, I hadn’t had fucking sex with her.

The rest of the drive was thankfully uneventful. Arriving at mom’s, I didn’t hide my grin at Uncle Paul as he shovelled snow off the path and the drive.

“You good for doing mine next?” I greeted him as I got out of the truck.

“Ha, no,” he laughed as he stopped.

Looking at the sky, heavy with cloud, I looked at him. “Might have just wasted your time,” I commented as I approached.

“Yeah, but it prevents the ice from building up. Your mom’s chair’s no good on ice.”

“I know, you almost done?” I nodded to the little bit he still had to do. “I can take over if you want.”

“What and take all the glory?” He shoved me playfully. “Get inside. He’s been restless today.”

Frowning, I looked at the door. “He okay?”

“Babies,” he replied. “Alanna wasn’t worried about it; she checked his temperature three times.”

“Okay, I’ll see you inside.” I left him to his shovelling as I hurried inside the house. “Mom?” I called out.

“We’re here,” she shouted back as I bit my tongue to demand where the fuck here was. I found her in her bedroom, sitting up on the bed with a book, while Steele lay on a blanket with the neon ugly octopus.

“You okay?” I greeted her as I leaned over and pecked my son on his head.

“Yes, he’s been a bit restless today, but honestly, there’s nothing wrong with him.
