Chapter 39

Getting Sievers to confess now seemed impossible. And with no evidence from the scene—based on her conversation with Rey—Kate felt her chances of proving the murder growing dim. In addition, the deputies’ search for a drone left her with a question.

Flustered, irritated, mad from her confrontation with Sievers, she couldn’t let it go. She needed to brainstorm. With Lyle out of town, she took a chance and showed up at Drenda’s front door. The former academic approached problems differently than Kate did, so together they might find a way to tie the murder to Sievers, if she’d agree.

“Positively,” Drenda said as soon as Kate asked for help. “I was just going to have lunch, but there’s enough for two. Come on in.”

Dr. Adair’s Timeless Village townhouse, like her office, looked like a combination library and exhibition of sixties and seventies memorabilia: a Pet Rock, eight-track tape player, framed photo of David Cassidy. Kate settled down in a chrome and leather dining chair at her kitchen table while Drenda stirred a pot of pea soup.

“So you didn’t have any luck with Cory Sievers.”

She explained her interrogation techniques, some she learned from being a reporter early in her career. “I asked him questions I knew the answers to, to see how he responded when he told the truth. I even researched his hobbies so I could break the ice. He sounded for a moment like he was going to talk about arguing with Julian, but he finally got angry and threw me out.”

“I streamed a Cory Sievers movie last night. A family comedy. He was humorous and likable. But if you do an internet search you find out his personal life has been well, unsavory.”

“I’m disappointed I didn’t come up with the right approach with him.”

Drenda set two bowls of soup on the table along with muffins and sliced cheese. She turned on her coffee maker. “So what’s the next step?”

“That’s what I wanted to brainstorm about. There are three ways Sievers could have been on that overlook in time to kill Julian. The first way could have been a coincidence. He happened to be driving by the canyon and spotted him.”

“The canyon’s a fifteen- or twenty-minute drive from Polk on a county road,” Drenda said. “That type of coincidence is not reasonable.”

“Agreed. The second way would be if they had arranged to meet there. Rey said Julian received an untraceable call the night before.”

“But from here to Polk, then out to the canyon, is at least a forty-minute drive. Why meet way out there?” Drenda paused. “Or why meet at all?”

Kate swallowed a spoonful of soup, then pointed the spoon at Drenda. “No reason. Unless Sievers lured him out there.”

“Your conclusion then is that Sievers followed Mr. Russo to the canyon.”

“Had to be.”

Drenda helped herself to two squares of cheddar and pushed the plate to Kate. “That might be difficult to prove. We’d have to find someone who saw him leave or saw him following Mr. Russo.”

“Let’s talk about another problem.
