Drunken Meanderings

Alaric’s claiming of me almost ruined my night. I was also upset I never found Lizzie at the club—Breas screwed that one up. Eventually, the music and the hyped-up energy of the crowd wore me down, or softened me—I’m not sure which—but either way as the night wore on I didn’t feel so angry and mistreated anymore.

It was around that same time that Scott began delivering beers, to me first, and then to Alaric and the other band members. He’d “sneak” across the stage on tiptoe with a stupid-ass grin and deliver a half-empty pint because he either drank most of it or spilled it along the way. He’d curtsy to the crowd once he successfully delivered the beer. They’d congratulate him with whistles and cheers. He’d bashfully wave his hand at them in an “aw shucks” way before sneaking back across the stage, always managing to walk in front of Alaric. Alaric was good natured about it. He didn’t go all diva at Scott for taking away from his performance. Actually, he seemed to enjoy the diversion. The first time, he shook his head, silently laughing at him as he sang. Soon after, they began verbally exchanging greetings and thank yous and what’s ups. Then the fist bumps started—their friendship accelerating at a rapid pace. She just kept dancing with him, only stopping when he left for another pint, which was quite often. It was at those moments when she interested me the most. He’d leave for the bar, and she’d stop moving. She didn’t even sway to the music even though everyone around her was dancing. She acted as if it was the very last thing she wanted to be doing with her time, but as soon as Scott returned, she’d take the drink offered—if there was one—and start dancing again. It was all very methodical and didn’t sit right with me at all.

Don’t get me wrong. Scott was happy, and that’s all I wanted for him tonight, but something seemed off with Maria, and I was determined to find out what.

I tried reading her again, sending out signals but getting nothing. Nada. Zip. Not even the impressions I had earlier in the evening. It frustrated me to no end. I really thought that my mind-reading ability would strengthen when I stopped drinking the tea, but it didn’t seem to. Or the beer dulled all my senses, which was unfortunate in the current situation. Clarissa needs to teach me her tricks of blocking someone from reading their mind so I can find a loophole to reading every mind I desire.

It wasn’t difficult to guess what Alaric was thinking. He loved being onstage, performing for his fans. And we were all fans. At
