CHAPTER 9

The next morning, Saturday, he told her what her mother had said: that she could never have custody of Nicole again.

She sat with her hands around a mug of coffee, staring at the bottle of Tylenol next to her untouched toast.

He doubted that her mother would change her mind, he added.

Her expression remained empty.

“This doesn’t have to mean your work and your progress are for nothing. You can keep going for your own sake. You should keep going.”

Since that made no impression, he sought other ways to encourage her.

“You can still be part of Nicole’s life. You can see her every day, if you get an apartment nearby. It’s not everything you hoped for, but it’s something. You could help her with her homework at night.”

She cleared her throat. He kept quiet, inviting her response, but she only sipped her coffee.

“Are you all right?” he asked.

“I knew my Mom felt like that. It’s just hard to hear it again.”

He asked how her head felt.

“Not that good.”

He suggested she lie down and close her eyes. She agreed; he brought her a cold compress for her forehead. The creak of the floorboards as he left the living room was magnified by the quiet between them: the new, awkward absence of hopeful words.
