CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

TWO BLOCKS NORTH OF AL-IMAM KHAYAT MOSQUE

TAL AFAR, IRAQ

0452 HOURS LOCAL

Jed stopped at the corner and held up a closed fist, feeling the operators spreading out behind him and scanning their individual sectors. His joint five-person squad—call sign Sword—included Grayson and Bex, along with Eddy and Patches from Delta. Eli led the other stick—call sign Spear—with Johnny, Hyeon, and two Green Berets. Together, they were assigned to intercept the disguised Dark Horizon assaulters before they could attack a second local mosque.

The remainder of the blended team, call sign Shield, had Denny at the helm with three Delta shooters and Carl and Nisha representing the Shepherds. The plan was for Shield to hit the Dark Horizon compound to the north, kicking off the op, while operating on a separate channel to deconflict comms during simultaneous engagements. Further complicating matters was the need for the Shepherds to manage comms from their own TOC—aka the Watcher trailer inside the Air Force C-17 parked at the Tal Afar air base. Ben and Corbin would be providing “gifted guidance” that was certain to raise some eyebrows by the end of this thing.

It is what it is, Jed thought. Completing the mission and keeping my team alive is the priority. I’ll deal with how to spin it later.

“Variable, this is One—Sword is Studebaker,” Jed whispered into the boom mic beside the corner of his mouth, reporting they’d made the first checkpoint. Johnny had floated the idea of using Old Testament battle sites for checkpoints, but Jed decided it was too overt of a hint to use with their Green Beret partners. So vintage autos it was.

“Copy, Sword is Studebaker,” Ben came back.

“One, Two—Spear is Hudson,” Eli reported a minute later from his own checkpoint, six blocks to the east, where he was approaching at an opposing forty-five-degree offset from Jed’s team.

“Variable, One—sitrep,” Jed whispered, asking for an update on the enemy assaulter positions.

“We hold two six-man teams mustering east and west of you. We’ll call their movement, but you’ve infilled inside their perimeter without detection as we hoped. You should intercept them outside of Cadillac,” Ben said, Cadillac referring to the mosque.

“Roger,” Jed said. He was glad Ben was keeping Corbin off the radio. Her young voice would surely bring unwanted questions.

A distracting thought from Eddy popped into Jed’s head unbidden.

How do they know we’re undetected?

He glanced back at Eddy, who was scanning their six, not looking at Jed.

It’s already starting, Jed thought to himself. We’re going to have to be more careful.

On that cue, Corbin piped up in his head for the first time.

One, I’m reading four different Dark Ones on the assault team. I have good eyes and ears. They have no idea you’re there. Promise.

He smiled. Now that was intel definitely not fit for the open comms channel with the Green Berets.

Thanks, Watcher One.

My pleasure.

And now came the waiting. Before they could engage, Denny and his stick needed to hit the compound, removing the bad guys’ command and control. Then, in the ensuing confusion, Sword and Spear would ambush the assaulters moving on the mosque.
