Chapter 10

Blue’s assignment for the evening was minding a minor celebrity from some reality TV show. George should have been there, but as he’d taken George’s shift, this was his joy. He had no idea who the person was, but Manny had prepared comprehensive notes which Blue appreciated.

Cath Morris, stage name Catherine Morris, was a short woman, she barely reached his chest, with platinum blonde hair that went to her waist. She had a reputation of being difficult. No, that wasn’t fair. She just didn’t want to be friendly with her bodyguards. She’d received death threats, so her management had put this in place while they assessed whether this was a credible threat. They were convinced it was an obsessed fan, but plenty of obsessed fans had hurt the target of their fixation before.

She’d made it clear from the moment he walked in that she wasn’t happy to have a different bodyguard. Gruff and taciturn, George had suited her just fine.

“I don’t want to talk or share my feelings,” she’d snapped. “Stay in the background while I work and socialize. And call me Morris. Not miss or ma’am. Just Morris.”

Manny’s notes had prepared him, so Blue nodded and took up one corner of the room. The last line on Manny’s notes said “She’s not an asshole. But don’t expect to braid her hair or coo over the latest fashion.”

Blue rolled his eyes. Like he would do that. The only trouble with being ignored was he had too much time to think about a certain dark-haired boy. He hoped the event that evening would be busy enough to take his mind off Alessandro.

Morris was due at a club promoting her latest movie. She had a small part which she was milking for all it was worth. She’d come from a small ranch in Texas, but smoothed out her accent, taken acting lessons, and launched herself as an actress. Manny’s notes had said Hollywood was clearly her end game. Blue had no issue with ambition. Although he’d never much wanted to rise through the ranks, he admired people who did.

The promotional event was at a club he knew well. He’d been to Peacock many times as a bodyguard, but he also had another connection. One of the owners, Jem Peacock was a boy and had recently paired up with one of Blue’s long-time friends, Griff.

Monaghan’s wasn’t exactly welcome in a lot of clubs. It was a small world, and they all knew what had happened to Louis Romero. But they trusted Blue and a handful of senior bodyguards. If Blue had been guarding Louis, he would never have been assaulted.

Blue got a friendly greeting from the men from CDR on the door at Peacock as they were waved in ahead of the line. He smiled and greeted them all by name as he guided his client into the club.

“They know you here?” Morris asked.

“They do. I’ve worked with most of them before. They’ve also been briefed on the threats made to you.”

He saw Morris take a deep breath as she stepped into the club and realized this was a big deal for her.
