Tuesday after work, Micki went to the gym to work out. When she unzipped her gym bag in the changing room, she found a folded piece of paper on top of her workout clothes. She squinted at it, then picked it up and opened it. Again, Garrett’s neat printing leaped off the page: “I know I am a huge dick. Literally and figuratively. Ha ha. Seriously, I want to be better. I care for you. I’ve never felt this way before.”

A smile tugged at her trembling lips. Joking about the size of his joystick when he was making these gestures wasn’t really like him. Her heart squeezed. When had he put this note in her gym bag? It must have been yesterday when he was at her place to drop off the flowers.

As she ran on the treadmill, she remembered the time Garrett had showed up there when they’d first met. He’d pursued her so relentlessly and yet so charmingly. She’d been flattered, and he’d worn away her resistance to dating a rich playboy. At least, that was what she’d thought he was. Although she’d been powerfully attracted to him that night they’d met at Elite, he’d been there with a bunch of rich, drunk businessmen who were flirting outrageously, even inappropriately, with the women who crowded around them. They’d kind of squicked her out, and when Garrett had approached her she’d wanted nothing to do with a man like that.

But those other men had been clients and it hadn’t taken her long to learn that Garrett wasn’t like that. Yes, he was wealthy. Yes, he had women flirting with him. Yes, he’d dated quite a few of them. But he wasn’t the player she’d thought he was. Despite his confidence and air of command, she’d seen hints of vulnerability that had been weirdly endearing.

She wiped sweat off her forehead with the back of her hand. The covert gestures reminded her of his pursuit of her, how he’d kept showing up wherever she went, just talking to her but not asking her out. He’d systematically charmed her and waited until the moment he seemed to know she’d be softened up enough to agree to have dinner with him.

He was doing it again.

With a rush of adrenaline, she increased the pace of the treadmill and sprinted. A grin spread across her face. What did he have planned next? She suddenly felt excited and intrigued…

Oh, he was such a smart, bad man. And she was so susceptible to him.
