Amber was exhausted, achy, and wet. Sitting at a desk eight hours a day, then walking several blocks from the bus station—tonight in the pouring rain—was a far cry from the lifestyle she was accustomed to. Not that she hadn’t done plenty of walking in New York, but she used to be in better shape thanks to her gym membership.

Maybe she could find a nearby gym soon. Hayley might like to go with her. Besides being good for her health and development, it would be a great opportunity for them to bond as mother and daughter, maybe make some friends as well. And it would give her another opportunity to keep an eye on Hayley.

When had warden become part of her job as mother? She supposed it was normal for teenagers to sneak out sometimes and lie to their parents about it—she’d done it often enough herself—but the circumstances were different now.

She hadn’t read anything new about Maureen McKenna’s murder, although she scanned the news every day, hoping to learn they’d caught the killer. Maybe she was hoping the hunky detective would come knocking at her door again to give her the good news personally.

She shook her head. God, she was too old and jaded to have such fantasies. Every night when she went to bed she lay awake, remembering the number one therapy for insomnia, the thing all magazines recommended: think of something pleasant, a happy memory or something nice in your life.

It was hard to think of anything nice in her life right now. Everything had revolved around her family and her marriage, but now all of those memories were tainted by Dean’s affair. So what did she have left other than a little fantasy about a sexy man she probably would never see again?

For the second time in a week, she’d been so lost in thought she almost walked past her house. Scoffing, she stopped herself just in time.

It would’ve been cheaper to rent a flat, but Hayley had always lived in a house, and she wanted her daughter to have a backyard where she could sit in the fresh air and listen to music, the way she had back in New York.

She was rummaging through her purse looking for her key, when she spotted a tabby cat perched up on the stone railing that edged their old-fashioned veranda. Judging by its size and battle-scarred face, this guy must be king of the neighborhood.

“Hi there,” she said, hoping she wouldn’t scare him. “Come to inspect the new-comers?”

The cat—far from being afraid—watched her with cold green eyes, in that superior way innate to felines. As she reached out to let him sniff her hand, he tilted his pink nose toward it in a gesture fit for royalty, and his white whiskers twitched. Deciding she was acceptable—for a human—he let her stroke his head, then tipped it back, allowing her to scratch under his chin.

Amber couldn’t stifle her giggle. She loved animals, especially cats. They’d adopted one
