Kai wondered whether he had made the biggest mistake of his life in leaving the city with Dax. He knew the reason for the uneasiness was his own fault, and he only had himself to blame for Dax’s temper. He should have known better than to spy on people during moments of intimacy. He didn’t have the right to use his powers in such a way, and Dax had every reason to be angry with him for what he had done.
“I’m sorry,” Kai offered when the silence had become too much for him to bear.
Dax grunted but didn’t turn round. Kai guessed he wanted something more before he returned to the relatively easy-going merman he had been before.
They swam a little farther, and the whole time Dax refused to look at him.
“What more do you want?” Kai asked. “I said I’m sorry for spying on you. And it’s not like there weren’t half a dozen other mer on the beach with you, watching you fuck Lyon.”
“It’s not about the spying, though the fact you did it after all your talk about meditation makes you a damned hypocrite.”
“What is it about then?” Kai pressed on, when it seemed Dax wasn’t going to elaborate.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Then why are you still in a temper?”
“I’m not.”
“You haven’t said a word since we left the cavern.”
“Maybe I have a lot on my mind, thinking about Lyon.”
Kai didn’t believe him for a moment. He had witnessed Dax and Lyon’s goodbye, and there was nothing between them to even suggest the two of them had had sex the night before. “Fine. Don’t tell me. But if you don’t stop being such a misery I may just swim back to the city and leave you to it.”
“No you won’t.”
Kai glared at Dax. He was right, of course, but he didn’t have to sound so sure of himself. “You don’t know me as well as you think you do. I can use my powers to get me safely back. I don’t need you to guide me there.”
“It’s nothing to do with you being blind,” Dax replied. “You won’t go back because you want to stay with me.”
“Not while you’re in such a temper, I don’t.”
“Well, you know what you need to do.”
“No, I don’t. I’ve already said I’m sorry.”
Dax spun round and Kai, blind for the moment, banged into him. “Sorry,” Dax offered. “I forgot you can’t always see.”
“How can you forget?”
“Because you’re so capable, obviously. You barely need to hold onto me to be guided at all.”
“Would you prefer I cling to you like a bloody limpet?”
“Yes, no, I mean…”
“What?”
“Maybe I kind of like the idea of you holding my hand while we’re swimming. I know you like to be seen as independent, but sometimes it’s as if you can’t even ask for help when you do need it.”
“I don’t need your help to swim. I’m as much a merman as you.”
“I never said you weren’t. Damn, you’re way too sensitive. I meant I want to hold your hand because I just want to.
