Chapter Ten

Saturday, September 10

“Well,” Saundra drawled, leaning into the gap between door and frame to look out of her apartment. “Think of the devil and he appears. And here I thought you had taken off for more interesting places.”

“I would, if there wasn’t work and more keeping me here. And it’s not you. For a change,” Nick West returned with a slight smirk. Not as large a smirk as she expected, after he had swooped in and rescued her, like he had done when her cousins had rallied the school bullies against her. He raised the cardboard tray with two large, sealed take-out cups and a paper bag that bulged with promise. Grease smears darkened the logo for Deli-licious. “Are you going let me in while the food is still hot?”

“A man who brings breakfast when I don’t feel like cooking. How did I luck out?” She gave up fighting her smile and stepped back, pulling the door open. “But what makes you think there’s trouble? Carruthers has orders to stay away from me, and Roger Cadburn has to wear an ankle monitor. And don’t you dare say Curtis is a threat.”

“None of them.” He handed her the bag that smelled of cheese and sausage and bread, and reached with his free hand to tug open the sliding door to the balcony. “Hate to break it to you but checking up on you wasn’t my first reason for coming to this sleepy little town.”

“Really? Why do I feel relieved rather than insulted?”

“For starters, you’re intelligent and humble. I have no idea why you resent my brotherly concern.” He gave her a wide-eyed look of mocking innocence.

Saundra doubted Nick had ever been innocent, even when he was a wriggling baby in diapers. She followed him out onto the balcony. “I’ve been wondering. Which intelligence agency do you work for?”

“Don’t know what you’re talking about. I work for your aunt.”

She chose not to comment on that. “So, what or who brought you to town, and why do you have time to handle my new bullies without ignoring your prime mission?”

“What do you know about a guy named Conrad Price, who runs Fontaine Realty?”

“Besides threatening to run against Roger Cadburn, which would normally make him the town golden boy?” She shook her head, distracted when Nick unwrapped the sloppy, incredible-smelling breakfast bagel sandwiches that oozed cheese and onions and an interesting greenish sauce, nearly hiding the hash brown patty and sausage and bacon. “Why are you investigating him?” She hoped he would talk and not ask her questions for a while. This definitely needed to be eaten hot.

“An old friend tracking some money followed a trail here, and there’s been some hijinks with some highly skilled manipulation of electronic records. What do you know about your friend Eden and the computer geek who works with her?”

“Just about that. I haven’t been in town that long.” She took a bite and seriously considered kissing him. But that would mean smearing some of that mouthful on him, and she didn’t want to waste anything.
