A “seasoned” dancer, beginning to investigate at these edges, has:

begun to allow any point of the body to be ready, at any moment, to initiate in any direction, at any velocity

an expanded ability to send invitations that used to be given through touch but now can be broadcast and received through the space between bodies

many relatable places in their own body offering multiple points of engagement: I call this poly-centric dancing

the capacity to dance with a lucid touch. Their partner can feel not only the touch, but also feel the partner feeling the touch

a visceral understanding of the spiral; falling AND spiraling into the backspace

the ability to make the space around themselves tangible. To not rely solely on their partner, they project past themselves to get support from space itself

an understanding of how to fall into the spontaneous acrobatics of the form (rather than the “wink, wink, I’m about to fly into your shoulder” lift)

a virtuosity born of entering dynamic movement without knowing how it will resolve itself

a presence that dilates time by leaving something behind (often by spiraling) so that newfound impulses can be sourced from the past, the present or somewhere ahead along the present trajectory

the awareness of not dancing their skills so much as dancing with their partner: this is why they have the ability to dance with people of all levels of experience
