Chapter 15

Halley’s stomach was growling loudly by the time they’d finished answering Dick’s questions. She was still astonished that he’d agreed to question the pair of them together, instead of separating them. She wasn’t a lawyer, she had no legal grounds for demanding that she stay with Phoenix.

Though Dick, as well as everyone in the department, had gone through sensitivity training, it did occur to her that the reason Dick had wanted her in the room was to act as a buffer to Phoenix, especially since he’d just lost Billy.

Dick hadn’t gotten any new information out of Phoenix, nothing that Halley hadn’t been able to ascertain on her own.

The pair of them stood on the sidewalk outside of the downtown police precinct. The wan November sun barely made its way through the clouds. Winds howled down the street. The constant traffic made a good substitute for the sound of the waves on the shore behind them.

“Now what?” Phoenix asked. They’d already called for an Uber to take them to their next destination. Halley had declined a ride. Since she was already downtown, might as well follow Mr. Farrow to his usual lunch.

Halley shrugged in response. “There really isn’t much else we can do. Unless you want to go looking through high school yearbook pictures as well.”

Phoenix pressed their brightly painted lips together, then shook their head. “I already have my suspicions. And thank you for not bringing that up to the dick.”

“You’re welcome,” Halley said. Though she’d felt uncomfortable about leaving that detail out, telling Dick that Phoenix had some suspicions wouldn’t have helped.

“You should follow Warren,” Phoenix said.

“The cops will be doing that,” Halley said. “I don’t want to get in the way of their investigation.”

“They’ll fuck it up,” Phoenix said bluntly.

“And if I were around, they’d blame me for it,” Halley replied. “I would just as soon that they fuck it up on their own time, thank you very much.”

“Warren’s a dead man walking,” Phoenix declared.

“Why do you say that?” Halley asked.

“His ego won’t allow him to let go of this,” Phoenix said. “He’ll deliberately lose his police escort. And Dancer will take him.”

Halley shook her head, not following Phoenix’s logic.

“Dancer doesn’t plan on giving Warren an interview. Warren will be their next kill.”

Halley shrugged. “We don’t know that, not for certain. Plus there isn’t anything I can do. If Warren deliberately slips his police escort, that’s on his head.”

“Fine,” Phoenix said, waving at the car that was obviously their ride. “Let him be the victim of his own stupidity. Just call me Cassandra. Remember?”

With that, they slid into the car, the driver rejoining traffic immediately.

Halley sighed, frustrated. There were so many arguments against her doing something as idiotic as following an individual that the police were already tailing. She couldn’t even begin to enumerate them.

Plus, she had other work to do. Investigative work that was actually paying her bills. In addition to the Farrow case, she had two others that she needed to put in some time on.
