In Dreams

Johnnie woke alone, in a place familiar and strange all at once, screaming in pain and clutching at his throat.

Tears stung his eyes as the events of the mortal plane clashed with his abrupt arrival on the dream plane. He gulped for air, blinked away the tears, and one by one managed to release his fingers from around his throat.

Was he dead now? Had death thrown him into dreaming, to live here forever, forced to exist wholly as an incubus? His stomach churned at the thought. He was too human to want to live that way, no matter that it came naturally and easily when he let his guard down or something angered him.

His head buzzed, ached, but that could just be lingering disorientation. He had not been thrown into dreaming like this since he had gone to save his family after they had been struck by a sleeping beauty curse.

Tears stung his eyes anew, chest giving a painful lurch. That had been when Grim had come to save him, after Johnnie had gotten angry and ordered him fired. Such a tumultuous time, it seemed forever ago, but had only been a few years.

Johnnie had never understood why they said it like they were surprised that a boy raised by vampires would act like them. But as it turned out, he was better than any vampire when it came to luring in humans—most anyone—with beauty and desire. Especially here, where he was anything but powerless. No, here, he could be one of the deadliest predators on the plane if he wanted.

He took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then did it again, and a third time, until he finally felt a little calmer. He held a hand to his throat again, feeling the wound there. It was partially healed, which was odd, but his subconscious could have done that because god knew he did not want to walk around with an open wound.

Climbing to his feet, Johnnie finally took in his surroundings and saw he had arrived at his father's home. Not unusual, it was one of his safe spaces, and he had promised Ontoniel he would be careful. So much for that.

Was his throat permanently scarred now? So much for his beauty.

Oh, honestly, what was his problem. "But vanity, not love, has been my folly[14]," he muttered into the silence.

If only he had not lost his cane, but
