A cold shiver runs down my spine.

I hear a creak as someone puts a foot onto the steps at the entrance to the cellar.

Tom positions the barrel of the gun under his chin, resting his head down on it, his hands around the trigger.

‘Tom, don’t!’ I shout. ‘Please, this must be a mistake. Of course you didn’t kill her. Listen, put the gun down and let’s talk about this. Adam’s outside, why don’t I get him to come in and talk to you. We can all sit down and talk about what you think you remember. Would you like that?’

‘No! I don’t want him!’

I take a few steps towards him but he shouts for me to stay where I am. ‘I’m sorry,’ he says sadly.

There’s a deafening blast as the gun goes off.

My ears are ringing.

I can’t hear.

Everything then seems to happen all at once.

Tom’s body slumps forward, then falls to the floor.

I hear a scream behind me, but I’m not aware of who it is.

A hand on my shoulder.

A flash of lightning illuminates the room.

Everything’s red.

Blood.

Everywhere.

On the ceiling, on the walls and across the glass of the window.

Alice’s clothes and toys are splattered with blood and brain matter.

Tom’s body spasms.

Blood pours from what’s left of his head. There’s a smell like a butcher’s shop around me, and a metallic taste in my mouth.

My ears are still ringing.

Something thick and warm oozes down my face.

I run my hand through my hair and look at it. Wet, and red.

I see Adam’s face in front of me.

He’s shouting at me, but I can’t make out what he is saying.

Red and blue lights flash through the window from the road outside.

I can’t hear anything. I don’t understand what’s happening.

Adam spins me round towards the stairs.

Another flash of lightning reveals Helen Abbott lying in a heap on the floor. Her body is convulsing. Adam leads me up the stairs. There are policemen in the kitchen. People are rushing past us, down into the cellar.

Adam ushers me out of the house.

My knees are weak. I see Sandie Jackson staring at me from one of the windows of my old house across the street, a look of terror on her face.

I collapse, and everything goes black.
