Unfortunately, Casey didn’t get to take advantage of their third date right away. They spent most of the evening sitting in the cab of his truck, eating and talking. Jane’s work as a translator of the boring—or at least what she labeled as boring—led to talking about how she studied languages. As a milbrat, she’d been all over the world at various duty stations. At each one, she made it a point of trying to learn the local language.

He loved the stories she told. After the rain abated, they’d even taken a walk before he returned her to her car and made himself bid her a goodnight with only a kiss to her cheek. The weekend blew past though as a rush job came in for coding, then he was on shift for twenty-four hours. The next day he had off, Jane asked for a rain check—giggling as she did so. She had to finish a translation due that Friday, then he was back on shift.

They filled in the missed opportunities by texting and a couple of phone calls. As things went, it delighted Casey that Jane made a real effort. Each text exchange always included a joke or a fun observation about their day. Casey didn’t know which of them started the routine, but they both participated. Occasionally, her texts included details about what went wrong in her day. Oddly, he found himself particularly grateful when she let them know how bad her physical therapy had gone. Not because it had gone badly for her, but because she trusted him enough to share her discomfort.

Getting to know her amped up his investment in what was going on between them. He wasn’t ready to give their relationship a label, or had even decided if they needed one. James recommended that he talk to her, because she needed a buddy. Casey found himself confiding in her about the momentary freakout he experienced clearing the school after a fire broke out in the lunchroom kitchens, even though the fire was contained and no one was in danger—he couldn’t get past the idea it was an elementary school with kids in it.

Casey, you got upset because you care. I think I’d rather have a firefighter who cared the one who didn’t. Did I ever tell you about the fireman who got me out of the house?

Though he’d been confessing to a weakness, she’d opened an entirely different door. No, you didn’t. And you don’t have to just to make me feel better. You already have done that.

She didn’t answer right away, but when his screen filled up with a long paragraph he understood why.

I don’t mind telling you. It’s weird getting to know you has me talking about this easier. I guess not with other people but with you. I was asleep when the fire started. I’ve been working a lot trying to finish translation, and my eyes were tired and my neck was sore. I admit it — I’ve been skipping my workouts for two weeks, working nonstop, and living on a diet of Dr Pepper and Doritos.
