Interlude: Withering Happiness
Tobias had been living in the new house since the day after he and Dahlia had broken off the engagement. Emilia had joined him a day later than intended. News of what had happened between him and Dahlia had spread quickly from the Merchantsâ Guild. If Emilia had been working the reception desk at Orlando & Co., she might have been subjected to all kinds of rumors, so Tobias brought her to stay in the house for the time being instead.
Tobias had been braced for harsh criticism after his sudden decision to leave Dahlia. However, to his surprise, there wasnât much oppositionâif anything, his mother had actually encouraged him. She seemed to think it was a great opportunity for the family to create ties with Viscount Tallini. His mother had appeared to get along very well with Dahlia until then, so in truth, heâd been taken aback by her reaction. His older brother was away in a neighboring kingdom buying up stock, so he hadnât been here to oppose Tobiasâs decision. No doubt heâd have something to say when he got home, though.
Tobias had intended to take some time off work after marrying Dahlia. But now, those plans had been turned upside down. Not only had he been forced to pay her damages for breaking off the engagement, but there had been the cost of moving Emilia into the new house as well. His priority at the moment was to find some new work as soon as possibleâwhich was why he was currently sitting in the workshop, sifting through the documents there. Up until now, heâd left it to Dahlia to work out the cost price of their products, but he couldnât rely on her anymore. They werenât very difficult calculations; he was sure Emilia would be able to take care of them. It would be a good excuse to spend time together here in the workshop too. Pleased with the thought, Tobias called Emilia from her room.
âCould you total up the prices in this chart? You just need to start at the top and add as you go down.â
âIâm really sorry, Tobias... Iâll be too slow. Iâm not very good with numbers.â
She looked so discomfited that Tobias immediately gave up on the idea, looking around for something else for her to do instead.
âIn that case, could you maybe write out those labels for the raincoats?â
âUm, m-my writing isnât very neat... I donât think I could do them as nicely as the example.â
The one whoâd written that example label had been Dahlia. The letters were clear and neat, slightly slanting up to the right. Emiliaâs hand, meanwhile, was a little untidy. He couldnât blame her for not wanting to be compared.
âYour toolmaking work looks so difficult to me and I donât really understand anything about it, so I was just staying out of the way in my room.â
âThatâs all right; I understand. Do you think you could manage dinner, then?â
âDinner? Donât you hire a cook if youâre not eating out?â Emilia replied, her light-brown eyes wide.
