This Story Gets Much Lighter—I Promise!

“Perhaps now we can take a respite?” LK wheezed.

I crept back from the doorway at the end of a museum corridor. Still no sign of the Minotaur or any zombies, for that matter. A sudden thought hit me—what if the Minotaur had died and was now Re-Lifed as a zombie like Lucy?

No, I told myself. It wasn’t true. It couldn’t be because I wasn’t sure I could survive the passing of another friend.

I turned my mind back to the matter at hand: finding the Minotaur and getting to ground level so we could find a safe place to regroup and review what our options were. Maybe the zombie situation wasn’t as bad as we thought …

Gargoyles had damaged the lower portion of the fire escape stairwell, forcing us to take a detour to the ground floor. Not that we were headed to the streets just yet. It would be a cold day in hell before I left behind a living friend and the Minotaur, as far as I knew still had a heartbeat.

I’d never seen the lich exhausted like this before. He leaned forward, supporting himself with his green palms on his knees. Beside him, Sharon didn’t seem much stronger. Had the siren’s cursed horn in combination with Nyx’s ritual drained the ghosts that much? Had it unwittingly burned their time while summoning them toward the sacrifice of spirits? AKA the ritual that had brought about the zombie apocalypse.

“We can’t take a breather,” I said. “The Minotaur is somewhere in this museum and we need to find him.”

Beside me Orion stood with one of my father’s arms slung over his shoulders. My poor dad … I didn’t blame him for being so weak-kneed. This was a lot to take in and he was used to teaching behind a desk. Gone was the man who’d enjoyed taking me camping and exploring the ruins and structures of ancient Greece. Back when my mother’s condition had really started to take a turn for the worse, he’d professed that his adventurous days were over.

Speaking of my mother … as grim as the thought was, I was glad that she’d wanted to be cremated after she died. Standing there in the museum, I didn’t think I’d be able to face her if she came back as a zombie.

Orion cleared his throat. “While I agree that it is important to find the Minotaur, it may be difficult to find him. The fact that we don’t hear him means that he is probably resting somewhere.” He drew in a breath. “Perhaps we should get your father and the ghosts to a safe place first and come back?”

“What if he’s hurt?” I said. “What if the Minotaur needs us?”

“We haven’t seen any gargoyles,” Orion said testily. “It’s quiet in here. Almost too quiet.”

“Can’t you just burn a bit of time and locate our friend?”

Orion studied me carefully. “Theo, are you OK?

“Yes, I’m OK. But the Minotaur might not be.”

Scratching his chin, Orion said, “It’s just that you never wish me to burn time.
