Chapter Seven

Since Alex and Samantha had both cleared their schedules, they decided to turn the day into a celebration. Remembering the conversation in the doctor’s office, Alex had plans to head for the marina.

The phone rang as they were preparing to walk out the door.

“Hello, dear.” Gram’s concern came clearly through the phone line. “I heard you had to pick up Gabe early from Emily’s. Is everything okay?”

“Actually, Samantha picked him up. She helped me settle him down for a nap. He slept for a couple of hours, and he’s feeling better now.” Alex glossed over the more traumatic events. To distract Gram, he mentioned their planned trip to the marina.

Gram promptly invited herself along. “It’ll be a nice way to become better acquainted with Samantha.”

So much for a romantic day on the bay. Instead of a quiet outing where he got to know Gabe better and touch Samantha often, Alex found himself chaperoned by his grandmother.

Once on the water, his mood picked up. It was a beautiful day for a ride on his twenty-two-foot cabin cruiser. The sun was high, the water blue and the wind mild. He couldn’t ask for a more perfect day to be on the water.

Perfect, too, was Gram taking Gabe inside the cabin out of the sun, leaving Alex alone with Samantha. He glanced to where she lay on her stomach on a blanket in the bow of the boat. A long-sleeved shirt covered her upper body, but her long lovely legs, displayed to advantage in blue shorts, were exposed to the slow burn of the sun.

Alex frowned. In San Diego it was never smart to underestimate the power of the sun. The comfortable temperatures often fooled people into thinking they were safe, but even in February they could suffer the effects of sunburn if they weren’t careful.

Alex didn’t want to see Samantha’s soft skin damaged by the elements. After setting the controls and dropping anchor, he grabbed his bag, pulled out the sunblock and sat down on the blanket beside her.

She looked up with a smile and propped herself up on her elbows. “Hello.” She kicked her calves in the air, crossed them at the ankle. “Why aren’t you driving the boat?”

Leaning down on his elbow, he put himself on level with her, nearly mouth to mouth. “I’d rather sit with you.”

Her gaze roved over his chest and shoulders. Lazily, she blinked. “What about Gram and Gabe?”

“Gram’s lying down with him inside. The fresh air and sun have made them both sleepy.” Alex lifted an eyebrow at Samantha. “It’s just you and me and the seagulls.”

Pink dusted her cheeks. She tried to appear unaffected by his teasing but her eyes failed to meet his. “Thank you for bringing us out today. It’s fantastic. I almost feel guilty for playing hooky.”

“Ahh,” he said as if he understood completely. Then he leaned closer to breathe against her ear. “Liar.”

She laughed and knocked his shoulder with hers. “I said almost.”

He showed her the tube in his hand.
