Kell saw Jamey’s eyes widen and knew what she’d spotted. Part of him didn’t care. He was so damned tired tonight. Tired of it all.

“You’re hurt!” she cried, rushing to him, her arm extended.

He raised a hand to keep her from coming any closer. Even that small but abrupt movement made him wince. He ached all over, and the thought of someone touching him right now, even Jamey, had the appeal of placing a hot brand on his skin.

“I’m fine,” he lied. “It’s nothing serious.”

“Let me see!” she said with no indication of having heard him. With her free hand she took his elbow and turned him toward better light as she bent to peer at his side. “What in heaven’s name happened—” She cut herself off, and Kell knew it was because she’d discerned the imprint of a hoof in his skin that he’d just thoroughly examined in the bathroom mirror. The answer to her question was obvious: he’d gotten stomped.

“No broken skin, at least. I bet that hurts like a bear.” She glanced up at him with pure sympathy in her gray-green eyes. Sympathy he didn’t want or deserve.

“I’ve been soaking in a hot tub for an hour and I feel fine. Now if you’ll let me by—”

“You don’t look fine. And this looks like a couple of cracked ribs.”

“They’re just bruised. It’s not like I punctured a lung,” he remarked, unable to keep the sarcasm from his voice.

“Mumph,” she said, meaning she’d see for herself. “Where else are you hurt?”

“It’d take a lot less time to tell you where I’m not,” he shot back, done with the inquisition. He hoped she’d let the subject drop and not ask any more questions, but it wasn’t to be.

“Do you want to tell me what happened?” she asked.

“Not particularly.” He noticed how she tactfully rephrased her earlier inquiry, but it didn’t diminish his annoyance as he tried not to recoil from her like an injured animal as she skimmed a finger over the imprint with the lightest of touches. That grazing contact didn’t smart like he’d thought it would, but it didn’t feel...good, either. Then she palpated the spot, still with gentle fingers. He couldn’t prevent sucking in a breath, which expanded his chest and caused another spasm of pain to shoot through his injured muscles. Gripping the nearby doorjamb, Kell bit off a curse.

“Why not?” she asked, still probing delicately.

“Because,” he said through gritted teeth, “I don’t want to hear what is bound to be one of your blunt-as-you-please opinions on how it served me right to get in a wreck with that infernal, blasted, damn-it-to-hell Brahman cow. Now will you let me by so I can go lick my wounds in peace?”

She raised her brows like a disapproving mother, and he guessed he was seeing the Jamey Dunn who knew how to handle cowboys, as she’d claimed. Except today he’d not proved himself to be much of one.

“Nothin’ seems to be wrong with your mouth,” she observed wryly.
