VICTOR’S BAR IS BUSY TONIGHT, crammed with bikers wearing Misfits jackets. They’re loud and rough. When I walk past with Daddy, I can feel their stares.

I’m wearing shorts and a tank top. Had to fight tooth and nail with Daddy to wear them too. He said with the way I look, it’d be like throwing a hunk of meat into a shark tank.

Whatever. I know he’ll keep me safe.

Although I’m starting to think I should’ve worn jeans or something. The stares aimed at me aren’t all pleasant.

The whole place smells of leather and man. A thrill shoots down my spine.

Daddy takes me to the bar, where Vic shakes his head.

“You know what she wants,” Daddy says.

Vic looks at me. “Sure about this, Dani?”

“Sure as can be, Uncle Vic.” I give him a sweet smile.

A flicker passes over Vic’s face. “You better keep both eyes on her, Randall.”

Daddy’s arm is tight around my waist. “I intend to.”

“They’re ready in the pool lounge,” Vic says. “We’ll give her the standard initiation ceremony.”

Keeping his arm around me, Daddy leads me down a hallway toward the pool room.

“This is just for one day, little girl. A taste.”

“I know.”

He palms my butt. “Don’t talk to any strangers.”

“As if.”

“As if what?” He smacks my rear.

“Nothing,” I chirp.

The pool room is packed with bikers sitting along the walls drinking beer. A few women too. I recognize Joanne and we exchange a wave.

Five rugged-looking men huddle around the jukebox. Daddy already told me they’re the Misfits’ current leadership, including this guy called Saxon, the club president.

We walk over and Daddy makes the introductions. The men give me surprisingly respectful bows. All except Saxon. He stares at me like, well, a shark.

“So this is Dani?” he says with a leer. “Pretty. You should bring her around more, Randall.”

Daddy steps between us.

I know there’s bad blood between them. Daddy told me the short version on the drive here. Saxon became president only because Daddy took himself out of the running, quitting the Misfits five years ago to devote all his attention to me. Saxon was elected president then, but he’s always held a grudge.

“Dani is mine,” Daddy tells him. “This is only for a day.”

“Victor told me. Go ahead. We’re ready for you.”

Daddy leads me away from the jukebox. I steal a glance over my shoulder to see Saxon staring at my backside. That guy totally gives me the creeps.

We begin the initiation ceremony on a corner stage bathed by spotlights. The ceremony is … surprisingly boring.

Daddy introduces me to the whole room, gives a short speech about brotherhood and other stuff I kinda tune out.

Vic hands me a patch that reads Property of the Misfits, and my face gets warmer. There’s a round of applause from the room, followed by some hoots quickly silenced by Daddy’s death glare.

Then the ceremony ends.

Daddy brings me to a table against the far wall. He orders burgers and fries for us.

I frown at the patch.

“That goes on your jacket later,” Daddy says. “It’s like a brand.
