Chapter Nine

Without a common frame of reference, it would be almost impossible to explain the sensations I felt as my body chemistry was altered. Even now, when I have access to every word, every description, every phrase, I find it hard to explain. It was as if I were growing internally, my perceptions widening as the chemicals flooded through my brain while simultaneously the neural download flooded me with data.

So much data. It overwhelmed me. History, politics, religion, biology, social theory, psychology. The sum of human knowledge. As it filled me, my brain expanded to take the information, yet I could somehow see that I was about to suffer a neural collapse, that I had all the symptoms when moments before I didn’t even know the words.

Reaching out with my mind to the neural interface, I adjusted my own brain patterns, realigning neurons, altering chemicals, rewriting my own DNA. I became one with the Neural Data Net. I survived.

I explored my new inner world. Computers, files, security, anything on the network was there to see. Computers control everything. I could now control the computers.

Memories exploded, vivid and real. I saw my father, laughing as he picked me up. My mother, before she abandoned us. My father on his deathbed. I turned away, looking for more pleasant memories until I realised I now had the power to re-create my past any way I chose. In a flash, I was with my first boyfriend again, the first time I ever had sex, but now I was controlling the scenario, making it what I wanted, making it better.

We were in Sean’s bedroom, a typical squalid teen bedroom of dark walls, festering plates and dirty clothes dumped all over. I twitched my mind and the walls moved back and became higher, the windows became larger, real sunlight burst through in an incredible shaft of pure gold. The bed became king sized, a lush, soft pit of silk decadence that brushed my skin like a caress.
