Chapter 24

“He’s lying, and there are so many holes in his story that you could drive a truck through it,” Adam said the following morning when Julian and Tony joined him at the whiteboard in the incident room. Both men had dark rings beneath their eyes, but they appeared sharp and alert. “However, he knows enough that he must have been there when Marshall was killed. The forensics lab has his clothes for testing. He claims he got blood on his trainers when Marshall’s head hit the ground beside where he was standing, and his description of the crime scene was fairly accurate.”

“Not so sure about that, boss,” Tony said, studying the crime scene photos. “There were no voids in the blood splatter pattern to indicate anyone was standing close beside or behind him.”

“Interesting,” Adam said.

“So, where’s he been all this time?” Julian said.

“He claims he’s been hiding in the caretaker’s cottage at the school,” Adam said.

“You don’t sound like you believe him?” Julian said.

“I’m not sure what I believe.” Adam said. “Have you reviewed the notes from the uniforms’ door-to-door enquiries near the crime scene?”

“Yeah, what are you after?”

“Was there any mention of a group of young men hanging around the substation the night of Marshall’s death or a grey car with tinted windows?”

“Nope,” Julian said.

“Unfortunately, Harry’s mother let him shower while they called to let us know he was home, so any evidence on his body has gone. She’d also laundered his clothes and shoes before the first officers at the house thought to stop her, so I’m not sure what forensics will find. Anyway, I’m headed back there now. Julian, can you track down CCTV footage surrounding the Plaistow branch of McDonald's and surrounding area from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday night?” Adam stood and grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair.

“Tony, can you get over to the caretaker’s cottage at the school and see what the forensics team has found? I’ll be over once I’ve sat in on the rest of Harry’s interview with DS Cho.”

“Okay, sarge, I’ll see you there.”

Adam made his way down to the garage beneath the building where he’d parked his car earlier. He pulled out and put a call through to Kat’s mobile on his hands-free set.

She answered straight away. Adam could hear the rhythmic tapping of her heels as she walked.

“Adam, how are you this morning? What did Harry have to say?”

“I’m on my way back there now. We didn’t get through his story fully last night.”

“Okay,” Kat said, sounding disappointed. “So we’re no further ahead on where the money has come from?”

“Not yet, but I plan to ask about that this morning.”

“Did he say where he’d been?”

“Ongoing investigation and all that, Kat,” Adam reminded her.

“Yeah, but haven’t I been read in since I’m doing the forensic accounting work on him?”

“True, but I’m just not sure he’s telling the truth, so I won’t muddy your version of events with misinformation.”

“Not telling the truth? What makes you think that?”

“Just a hunch.
